Spurrier’s first class a preview of the future

By JOSEPH PERSON
Staff Writer

Steve Spurrier said his first South Carolina recruiting class is well representative of the geographical breakdown the Gamecocks’ roster will resemble under the former Florida coach.

USC's class includes eight players from both South Carolina and Florida, five from Georgia, three from North Carolina, two from New Jersey and one apiece from Tennessee and the state of Washington.

Taylor Rank, a tailback from Washington, grew up in the Atlanta area before his family relocated to Vancouver while he was in high school.

The 28-player class includes two junior college transfers, a departure from former USC coach Lou Holtz's reliance on JUCOs. Holtz and his staff signed 24 JUCOs over six years, including seven in 2003.

“To me junior colleges ought to be a position need specific,” said USC recruiting coordinator Rick Stockstill.

Change of heart. USC picked up five players who had previously committed elsewhere: quarterback Cade Thompson (North Carolina), receiver Carlos Thomas and linebacker Marvin Sapp (both Georgia Tech), tight end Jonathan Hannah (Virginia Tech) and athlete Brandyn Young (Maryland).

In 23 seasons as a college coach, Stockstill said he had never persuaded a committed player to change his mind.

“It was one of those years,” he said. “We got in on a lot of those guys because when they committed somewhere it was a different situation here. They opened their arms and they listed to what we had to say.”

Stadium incident update. Spurrier said two of the three returning players charged with larceny in connection with the November thefts of $18,000 worth of equipment from Williams-Brice Stadium will perform community service work as part of the school’s student judicial process.

Quarterback Syvelle Newton and offensive lineman Freddy Saint-Preux, who were charged with petit larceny for allegedly taking framed action photos, are likely to return from suspension upon completion of the work.

Offensive lineman Woodly Telfort, charged with grand larceny for allegedly stealing a laptop computer, is in “serious trouble,” according to Spurrier. Telfort remains in school while suspended from the team indefinitely, Spurrier said.

This and that. The NCAA granted linebacker Orus Lambert a fifth year of eligibility. Lambert, who had 22 tackles in 11 games in 2004, played a handful of snaps against Georgia in 2002 before sustaining a season-ending injury. The NCAA awarded Lambert the year back.

Spurrier will save bragging until later

Chance at first to win division, conference lures players to USC

By JOSEPH PERSON

Staff Writer

Several last-minute additions pushed Steve Spurrier’s first South Carolina recruiting class into the top 20 nationally, but the Gamecocks’ new coach said Wednesday he normally doesn’t brag about February successes.

Spurrier will reserve judgment until at least December.

“I think you can sort of confuse yourself or disillusion yourself every year with recruiting,” Spurrier said during a media gathering in the new building behind the south end zone at Williams-Brice Stadium.

“I’ve seen too many coaches brag about recruiting every year. When it’s all said and done, they go about 6-5 every year.”

Lou Holtz, Spurrier’s predecessor at USC, landed back-to-back, top-10 recruiting classes in 2002 and 2003. But the talent did not translate into more wins as the Gamecocks finished 5-7, 5-7, 6-5 in Holtz’s final three seasons in Columbia.

Spurrier, who took over for Holtz on Nov. 23, sold recruits on the Gamecocks’ improved facilities and tried to spin the school’s spotty football history into a positive.

“That’s something that we can offer that the big schools can’t. The chance to do it for the first time — to win a division, to win a conference,” said Spurrier, who won six SEC crowns and the 1996 national championship during 12 seasons at Florida from 1990-2001.

Spurrier counted eight South Carolina natives in the 28-player class, wrestling Columbia High tailback Mike Davis away from Clemson in a year in which the Tigers dominated the in-state recruiting. But 11th-hour announcements Wednesday from a pair of out-of-state prospects propelled the Gamecocks to No. 19 in the rankings compiled by Scout.com, two spots ahead of the Tigers.

Rivals.com had USC ranked No. 22 as of Wednesday evening.

North Carolina tight end Jonathan Hannah, who committed to Virginia Tech on Jan. 24, changed his mind and faxed his letter of intent to the Gamecocks’ office around 12:30 p.m.

“Jonathan Hannah was probably the surprise of the day. We’d been in touch with him,” Spurrier said. “He felt like he’d made a mistake and he corrected it today.”

The Gamecocks’ also received a fax from Tampa receiver O.J. Murdock, who did not announce his decision until Wednesday. The two additions gave the Gamecocks three players on Rivals’ list of the nation’s top 100 players — Atlanta-area receiver Carlos Thomas (No. 86), Murdock (No. 88) and Hannah (No. 99).

USC only had two such players in the previous three years — linebacker Ricardo Hurley (No. 17 in 2002) and tailback Demetris Summers (No. 21 in 2003).

Murdock and Thomas are among five signees who have not yet qualified academically. If all of those players qualify, USC would be two over the NCAA’s limit of 25 scholarship newcomers in August (junior college transfer Mike West enrolled in January and counts against last year’s total). Spurrier said two players potentially could enroll in January 2006 if everyone is eligible, although he does not expect that to happen.

The opportunity to play in Spurrier’s Fun ’n’ Gun offense rather than Holtz’s conservative scheme clearly made the Gamecocks more attractive to offensive skilled position players. Hannah and New Jersey native Shea McKeen helped persuade Rivals to rank the USC tight ends No. 3 nationally, with Thomas, Murdock and the other receivers coming in at No. 4 nationally on Rivals’ board.

Speaking of the entire class, Spurrier said: “Almost all of these players had opportunities to go to bigger schools, but they believe South Carolina has a great chance to do some big things.”

Spurrier later clarified what he meant by “bigger schools.”

“Schools who achieved a little bit more than we have in the past,” he said. “I didn’t mean bigger schools. I meant like Tennessee and Georgia or places like that.”

USC signed two quarterbacks in Tommy Beecher of Concord, N.C. and Cade Thompson of Maryville, Tenn. Though not highly rated, both players won state titles as seniors, the first time Spurrier could recall signing two state-champion quarterbacks in the same class.

Spurrier signed no offensive linemen, mainly because Holtz’s staff took six in 2004.

Recruiting for the first time in three years, Spurrier described a January day in which he flew to the Greenville-Spartanburg area to visit three recruits; returned to Columbia to pick up recruiting coordinator Rick Stockstill; flew to Tallahassee, Fla., to check in with committed defensive end Kerry Bonds; flew to Jacksonville, Fla., and rented a car to see another prospect before getting back to Columbia and making a few more recruiting calls.

Said Stockstill: “When he wasn’t in a home, he was on the phone.”

The 59-year-old Spurrier said his reputation for disliking recruiting near the end of his Florida tenure is unfounded.

“You can’t believe everything you hear,” he said. “I didn’t do anything that much different than I usually do. I found this is not a difficult place to recruit for. ... Look at the facilities we have, the stadium, the fans, the resources, and the opportunity for a young man to achieve things that have never happened before.”

You know, you just gave me an idea. Why not keep this thread going and going for years to come? Now we can start covering 2006 recruits. :D
That's what I'm saying....why does it have to end at all? This could turn into a "years long" thread where a person can come on here after OJ Murdock gets picked #2 overall in the NFL draft four years from now and go back to when we first started recruiting him.

Think about it, we'll be comparing recruits 3 years from now to the class we just brought in....it'd be awesome to just page back and see what everyone said about this player or that player when they were getting recruited.

The story of the Spurrier era is being told as you type! Not a bad thought, eh? :D

A couple of us were talking and we decided just to keep this thread going. Recruiting, spring training, etc, etc and work our way into recruiting for 2006. Then, years down the road, we can look back and see what we were saying when Spurrier first started recruiting and all. :D

Yep...Spurrier said it's like putting a band-aid on a broken leg. Very rarely does it pay off and when it does, you only have two (2) good years. He would much rather recruit a HS kid and coach him up in his system rather than recruit a JUCO and try to get him to unlearn what he has learned. :D

Unless a player is enrolled now (spring semester), he cannot participate in spring practice. Hopefully most of the guys who signed LOI yesterday will enroll for summer courses so they can start using our facilities. Otherwise they will have to wait until preseason practice which would be last of July or first of August.

O.J. Murdock was interviewed by Phil Kornblut, the long time host of Sports Talk heard throughout the state of South Carolina weeknights from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. It was an interview worth recording. With compliments of Phil Kornblut, we provide a transcript of the interview for you here ...

Korn: O.J. Murdock joins us now from his home in Tampa.

O.J.: Hey Gamecocks, how ya doin'! It's O.J. Murdock from Tampa, future wide receiver, future All-American wide receiver.

Korn: I think they're going to like that. OK, O.J., tell us how you ended up picking the Gamecocks over Florida, over Miami and over Florida State.

O.J.: It's all about Steve Spurrier. I mean he's an awesome guy. You'll have a guy like that just come in and change a program around like he's gonna do in the next couple of years. I mean he's gonna light it up you best believe that.

Korn: What is your greatest strength as a wide receiver?

O.J.: It has to be my speed. I mean it's gotta be by far. My ability to catch the ball and outrun defenders is amazing and I hope I'll be able to do that in Columbia.

Korn: Have you ever been caught from behind?

O.J.: Oh No Sir, never.

Korn: What is your favorite route?

O.J.: It was have to be two, my nine route and my deep post route.

Korn: Do you have good hands?

O.J.: Of course, or else I wouldn't be playing receiver.

Korn: I mean do you drop many balls?

O.J.: I may drop one every now and then when I am trying to get back in shape, in football condition, but I get back in football shape pretty quick.

Korn: Do you have any fear of going over the middle to catch a ball?

O.J.: Oh no sir. We have a number of across the middle routes that we run down here in Tampa and I am never scared to go across the middle.

Rich Taylor: O.J. I was wondering if you got a good indication from Coach Spurrier that you were going to have an opportunity to play right away?

O.J.: Oh yes sir. I mean because Troy Williamson left last year and the leading receiver coming back is Noah Whiteside and he only had something like 20-23 receptions. All the other receivers had something like 5-4. So just hearing that from him I knew I would have the opportunity to come in and play right away. All the other receivers are like 6-4 or 6-5 220 type guys and he said some of those would probably be moved to tight end so hopefully I'll be able to come in right away and light things up.

Rich Taylor: O.J there's a lot of talent in the state of Florida down there in the area where you are. Are you going to make it your mission to get some of those players down there that you are good friends with to come to The University of South Carolina to be a Gamecock?

O.J.: Oh yes sir, definitely. I mean Stoney Woodsen did it and he is going to be an outstanding defensive back for us. And my brother, he's coming up here hopefully. I mean there are a lot of guys down here interested in leaving the state, Florida athletes. Hopefully in a couple of years after South Carolina wins championships after championships we'll be able to take more of them out of Florida.

K-Mack: Is your nickname "The Juice" too.

O.J.: Yes, my nickname is The Juice.

Korn: You are named after O.J. Simpson right?

O.J.: Yes

Korn: You mentioned your brother. Is he a player?

O.J.: He'll be a junior this year at Middleton but last year he had four picks and three touchdowns returned from those picks.

Korn: You mentioned the student body at the basketball game chanting your name. Tell us about that.

O.J.: Oh! I was walking down the steps at the basketball game after dinner and they were chanting something and I couldn't hear them. But after awhile I started hearing "O.J." and chill bumps started running up and down my legs and my arms. It was amazing. I never experienced anything like that.

Rich Taylor: What are you hearing from the staff about who is going to get you the ball at quarterback next season?

O.J.: Well I know we have one 3 or 4 star quarterback returning in Blake Mitchell. We'll get a quarterback, I'm not worried about that because if you no Steve Spurrier then you know he'll get a quarterback. Gamecock fans need to stay tuned in.

I'm new to the site and have been watching for the past couple of months. It's great!! I've surfed manyIsites and this is the best for news...even the "rumors" are are pretty accurate. I wish to thank all that have given input on Spurrier's recruiting class. I like everyone else thinks he has done an outstanding job...and yes, we are extremely fortunate that he came here and believes in the Gamecocks. I really appreciated Lou, but I felt his time had passed him by...football thinking-wise. Spurrier is arrogant and sometimes a pain, but I love him to death....he'll makes those who play for him better players and people. He has that winning attitude. I'll get off the soap box and reinterate that this web site is a gem. It's now a short cut on my computer and the first and last thing I check each and every day. Good luck to all and a heart felt thanks!!!

We'll see. A lifelong gator fan means that he grew up loving Spurrier and dreaming of the opportunity to be coached by him. If he really is all about the Gators then the only team that would really have a chance of taking him away would be the Gamecocks.

Even if we lose out on him, I feel quite confident he's not the only stud QB that we'll be going after.

That's what I was trying to say. The guys that are under 300, can put on another 40 lbs easily.

Spurrier doesn't necessarly want gut, he wants speed. I expect to see some of those TE's converted into DL's or OL's.

We have plenty of linemen right now. I do expect for Spurrier to take at least five (5) more linemen next recruiting season. :D

Both of these statements are very true! It will be an interesting year for this young man. He's a Diehard Gator fan, but a Diehard Spurrier fan. Just like with OJ Murdock!

Looking at our numbers, unless some of our current QB's move to WR, I don't see us taking more than 1 QB next year. Now if some of our current QB's don't pick up SOS' system and we have to play a true freshman, then we'll probably take 2 again. But if our 3 current guys work out, then we'll probably redshirt the 2 true freshman and then sign 1 next year.

Either way, Mr. Tebow will get lots of attention. He bleeds orange and blue, but I'm sure the look of both UF and USC's offenses (under new coaches) this year will have an impact on him.

So, now that the recruiting field is level, anything can happen. I know Mr. Tebow is a life long Gator, but take a look at CJ Byrd. He grew up a Gamecock, his parents were ulumni and he chose UGA. We thought the same thing at the beginning of the year. There's no way Coach Holtz would let him get away and look what happened.

Now with all that, I still say UF has the early lead on Tebow, but if SOS is on him already, he must like what he sees. It's a long year and neither Spurrier nor Meyer has coached a game yet (at their current schools).

It will be interesting this fall to see how the QB line-ups for both UF and USC pan out. There are other great QB's out there also. Then in 2007, the young man from Byrnes HS will be graduating. I understand he's going to be a big prospect also.

I was actually one of the souls who posed that question, more out of instant curiosity than anything else, but you are right, as is Del, who answered my question immediately. Upon checking my media guide, I see we have some "serious beef" as you say and are pretty well stocked, for now. Lou left us in good shape there.

With the loss of Troy W. and because of the new system employed by SOS, we were desperately in need of skill players, atheletes, etc., thus the emphasis on a heavy dose of wide receivers and tight end types. Everyone, including the running back, needs to have the ability to "catch the ball", as we all know and look forward to what is coming.

Hopefully, those OL's will relish their new roles as pass protectors.

This sites posts have slowed down some bit now that NSD has come and gone. But I guess that is to be expected. I believe Spurrier did a great job because he did something that other coaches didn't do. He looked at our team and only recruited what we NEEDED. OL was not on that list but WR, DB, DL, LB, DE, and TE most definitly were and look that is exactly what we got. I still believe that TE, WR, and LB were done that best. Most of them recruited this year will start next year. Can't wait for the Spring game to see the fun-n-gun in action!

First, let me admit the factors that probably make my thoughts on the matter completely meaningless:
1. I've only seen the kid play once so it could have just been a bad night for him.
2. He's only 15 or 16 so he could certainly mature physically a good deal over the next two years.

That being said, I saw Korn play this year and I really wasn't impressed. He didn't seem to have much arm strength at all, and I wasn't impressed with his decision making either. They still won the game, but it was more because of special teams and defense. I certainly won't complain if we sign Korn in two years, but I'm guessing there are QBs around the country that would be much better for the program. I suppose we shall see though.

We will! Spurrier will not take an in-state QB, just to keep the doors open. He has already said this years numbers will reflect the future. He didn't say he would take as many in-staters, then fill out the rest of the class. Although SC has great talent and he will develop as many relationships as he can.

I think he will try to take the stars, but I don't believe he will take as many projects. He will go elsewhere for more stars.

With QB's like Korn and BJ Phillips of Spring Valley (Class of 2006), you never know. They come from great programs and are annually surrounded by D1 prospects. Some have seen these guys play and then you hear mixed opinions.

I remember last year at this time (or before) lots of people thought Jordon Sorrels (Greenville) would be a D1 prospect. That never happened. Jordon was also annually surrounded by D1 prospects. One things for sure, Spurrier knows a QB. There are some we can be pretty sure about. We all knew Chris Leak was going to be good. It is pretty safe to say Tim Tebow will be good (of course SOS is already on him and so is Meyer). Others will be knocking on his door also.

The QB position will be interesting to watch every year under SOS. Didn't Stock play QB at FSU also? He knows a good bit about QB's also.

With Stock recruiting Tedbow I would say that if we don't get him, we ain't going to get him. Stock is the best recruiter we got and if he can't get him he ain't going to be got. I think that next year whether we get Tedbow or not we will get a 4 or 5 star QB. This is SS we are talking about. I also think we will get another 4 or 5 star WR. Especially if Murdock and Thomas have big seasons!!!

FLgamecockJAX
02-06-2005, 02:05 AM
I listened to Stock talk about what this coaching staff accomplished in such a short period of time (recruiting). He seems really excited about what they can accomplish this next recruiting season. Coach Stockstill already has great ties to the Jacksonville area. Those ties started during his FSU days and he utilized those ties during his Clemson days. They were always recruiting Jacksonville.

So now we have SOS' ties to that area and Coach Stock's ties. This should bode well for us.

It was very good for us to get another Mandarin HS player this year. We now have 2 Mandarin players on our roster. This school consistently puts out superstars! I've seen the WR coach at Mandarin wearing a Gamecock hat out in town.

I found some more talent that I'm sure our coaches will be calling.

1) WR Alex Rose First Coast High School

First Coast is a school that SOS had ties with while at UF.

2) CB Byron Maxwell Fort Dorchester North Charleston, SC

Twisty road led Murdock to S.C.

Coaching chaos pulled the Middleton standout every which way before he landed with Spurrier.
By KEITH NIEBUHR, Times Staff Writer
Published February 8, 2005

TAMPA - As the clock inched past midnight and Feb.1 turned into Feb.2, O.J. Murdock killed time in front of the television watching Fresh Prince of Bel-Air , listening to rap music and preparing his clothes. Typically, he'd be in bed by 11, but this evening he was up until 2:30 a.m.

"I tossed and turned all night," Murdock said.

At a national signing day ceremony that morning before friends, family, high school classmates and coaches, the standout Middleton receiver, one of the country's top football prospects, pulled a red and white South Carolina Gamecocks cap from his lap, placed it on his head and proudly announced, "I'll be attending the University of South Carolina."

The decision wasn't easy.

More than 40 colleges offered scholarships, from Miami to Pittsburgh, and the tugging didn't stop until Murdock signed on the dotted line. Promises were made and recruiting trips offered. Coaches called often, as did the media and Internet sites. At times it was fun. At times it was exhausting. Everyone had an opinion. Everyone had advice.

"I think he learned a lot," Middleton coach Harry Hubbard said.

The process lasted more than a year. The letters began arriving when Murdock was a junior, and in April he flew onto the radar screens of national recruiting services after performing well at a camp in Miami. "We watched him on film and he was just incredibly fast," said Jeremy Crabtree, an analyst for the recruiting Web site rivals100.com.

Murdock's speed was never more evident than at the 2004 Class 3A state track meet in Gainesville, where he placed third in the 100 and 200 meters. During the spring, he had conversations with then-Florida coach Ron Zook, then-LSU coach Nick Saban, Nebraska coach Bill Callahan and FSU coach Bobby Bowden. In the summer, his name began appearing on numerous top-100 national recruiting lists.

Murdock grew up a Florida fan and initially called the Gators his front-runner. But seemingly every week, his list of colleges changed. For much of the process, Murdock never considered leaving the state. But Tennessee crept into the picture. Later, South Carolina did the same. Then Florida fired Zook in October, and when asked after a season-ending loss to Armwood if he still was considering the Gators, Murdock did not hesitate: "No way."

"That really threw him a curve," Hubbard said.

The knuckleball came next. Throughout the fall, Murdock repeatedly told South Carolina assistant David Reaves he wasn't interested. But on Nov.23, the school hired former Florida coach Steve Spurrier, and before long the Gamecocks had Murdock's attention.

On Dec.3, Florida picked Utah's Urban Meyer to succeed Zook. Ten days later, Meyer met with Murdock at Middleton, and when the conversation was over the Gators were back in the picture. "I don't think it was confusing for O.J.," Middleton assistant Deon Maddox said. "I think it was challenging."

The first week of January, Spurrier and Reaves visited Murdock at the player's home and Murdock met the coach for the first time. Sitting in the Murdocks' living room, Spurrier, wearing his 1996 national championship ring, gave his best South Carolina pitch while Hubbard and Murdock's family (parents Kelvin and Jamesena, and grandmother Ernestine) listened, too.

"He told it like it was," Hubbard said. "He really laid the cards on the table."

Spurrier made a good sell, and the prospect of early playing time was alluring. It was then that Murdock began to seriously think South Carolina might be a fit. It had become a two-team race. The program he always loved was battling the coach for whom he always had wanted to play. "Was he confused?" Hubbard said. "I would say so."

Murdock left for Columbia, S.C., on Jan.14 and not long after arriving was watching tape. Not just any tape, mind you, but tape from the Gators' 1996 national championship team. As Florida's offense went up and down the field, Murdock's mind drifted. For a moment, he pictured himself playing for the Gators. But then his thoughts shifted to South Carolina.

He continued to assess the depth chart. One key receiver was leaving. Another, he was told, had grade issues. Before he returned home, Murdock made the call. He committed to South Carolina.

He told only a few people, including his father, but kept the news from his mother and most of his friends because he wanted to surprise them on signing day.

In a brief phone interview with the Times on Jan.27, Murdock said he was leaving for Gainesville the next day. It wasn't until Monday that Hubbard discovered his player didn't make the trip.

"I could have gone," Murdock said. "I just didn't want to. I had been there five or six times before."

Some Internet sites buzzed with questions about Murdock's academic qualification. He says that's not an issue; he expects to qualify. But Florida, he said, would have required him to take an extra foreign language course before he graduated, something he wasn't crazy about having to do. He says that wasn't a major factor in his decision, however, and maintains the Gators never rescinded their scholarship offer.

"It wasn't really a big issue," he said "They were still calling."

They weren't the only ones.

"When they found out he didn't visit (Florida), Florida State called," Hubbard said. "They wanted to know if they still had a chance."

They didn't. And neither did Florida.

As signing day approached, Murdock began screening his calls. One of the ones he didn't answer came from FSU assistant Daryl Dickey.

"I just turned it off a couple of times," Murdock said.

His nerves the night before signing weren't out of fear of making an incorrect choice. He simply was too excited to sleep. Earlier that evening, he told his mother his intentions.

"She already knew," Murdock said. "She could tell."

Not long after Murdock signed, things returned to normal, the way they were before every recruitnik from Tampa to Tulsa knew his height (6 feet) and weight (178). The mail has stopped, the only calls come from family and friends, and as Murdock said Monday, "I'm sleeping now."

As reported by Phil Kornblut

According to knowledgeable sources, several USC football players will be moving to new positions. This would include Freddy Saint-Preux and Eric Stroman moving from the defensive line to the offensive line, Chris Tucker moving from the offensive line to the defensive line, and Ryan Brown possibly moving from linebacker to fullback.

Has Del changed his name to Neo, or is this a different person? I also want to say that Avery Atkins had planned on shocking the world by signing with South Carolina but he changed his mind. He told USC signee Kenny Mckinly (I know it is spelled wrong) that he was definitely going to USC. Obviously that changed but we were the shocker that he was talking about! And also why would we move Brown to fullback, will we even use a fullback next year?, and we already have a very good one in Lamar.

That makes more sense! He also told Gerrod Sinclair that he would go to the same school as Gerrod. Too bad he changed his mind. Or too bad he was playing with everyone's mind. Whatever the intent was. I believe we got his attention and made him think.

I personally wonder if our signing and/or being in the lead for Murdock weighed in on Atkins' decision to NOT shock the world. No matter how great an aeriel attack Spurrier brings to the table, he still only has one ball to distribute and that may have had something to do with Avery's lean....

...but I could very well be wrong too. Atkins might be the best of team players for all I know. I'm not Neo by any stretch! lol :D

Spurrier Shines Despite Difficulties

A limited timeframe, nor a change of scenery could stop Steve Spurrier from bringing in another highly-touted recruiting class.

Seventy-one days. Most men would not have the ability to move to a new city, dust off three years of rust, and come through in a huge way for a brand new program in a span of just seventy-one days. Steve Spurrier is not like most men. After taking the head coaching position at the University of South Carolina on November 23rd, the "Ole Ball Coach" was faced with a task many people said he could not do: recruit top notch high school football players to Columbia. After this past Wednesday, it is safe to say those pessimists were wrong. On National Signing Day, twenty-eight high school seniors inked their official letter of intent with the Gamecocks. They aren't just any high school seniors, either – they are top notch seniors, top notch seniors Carolina wanted. Spurrier's first class looks as though it has the ability to fit into his fun-and-gun system and flourish early. The haul is loaded with speed, as Spurrier made it a point to go after the top skill position players in the Southeast as usual.

Carlos Thomas, rated the No. 9 wide receiver in the country per rivals.com, turned down schools like Florida, Ole Miss, and Ohio State in order to become a Gamecock. Meanwhile, O.J. Murdock, the No. 10 wide receiver in the country according to rivals.com, spurned his life-long favorite team, the Florida Gators, and inked with USC. Spurrier also did not hesitate to bring in some young men with impressive and imposing frames. Freddie Brown stands at 6'4", and Jared Cook towers above at 6'5". Rivals.com had both players, who will be considerable matchup problems for future opponents, ranked in top 50 wide receivers nationally.

While Spurrier raided the state of Florida by taking eight players from the Sunshine State, he did what has been impossible for Carolina coaches in the past…keep the best player in Columbia from leaving town. In the past, the Gamecocks have missed out on the Boulware brothers, both of whom went to Florida State, Richard Seymour, who played for Georgia (and just put a third gold ring on his hand), and most recently Leon Hart, a five star lineman who opted to play for the Auburn Tigers. This year was different. Mike Davis, ranked by scout.com as the 11th best running back in
the country, decided to play ball just ten minutes from home.

The surprise of the class came from Jonathan Hannah. The 4th best tight end and 5th best defensive end in the country according to rivals.com, Hannah had committed to Virginia Tech just days before changing his mind and signing with Carolina.

Another milestone, along with the signing of Mike Davis, was reached by Carolina when the coaching staff decided to give a scholarship to a kicker. Lou Holtz had neglected to do so in the past and it cost the Gamecocks several times. The special teams unit got an immediate shot in the arm when Ryan Succop, the 4th best kicker in the country per rivals.com, signed with the team. Succop has an incredible leg as he booted 98% of his kickoffs into the endzone.

Many recruiting services are reluctant to give this class high marks because Spurrier did not land an offensive lineman. Those pundits probably do not realize that the Gamecocks redshirted seven linemen last year, thus they were not in need of one in 2005. Despite that notion, this class still earned a top 20 final ranking distinction from Scout.com.

In a span of just seventy-one days, Carolina got the man, and potentially the athletes, they need to crack into the upper echelon of the SEC.

USC Jumps On Hot Quarterback
By Phil Kornblut
QB Tim Tebow (6-3 225) of St. Augustine, FL had an amazing junior season breaking the state of Florida total offense record, single season passing record and total touchdown record. The lefthander passed for 4800 yards and 46 touchdowns and rushed for 1500 yards and 26 touchdowns. "He has the ability to scramble and is a good drop back passer," said his coach Craig Howard. "He makes big plays off the scramble. He scrambles to throw the ball, not to run it." Tebow started to show his skills as a sophomore when he passed for 30 touchdowns and rushed for 19. He is also a basketball and baseball player. And he is home schooled. Howard said Tebow has over 40 offers at this point. USC is among them. Gamecock recruiter Rick Stockstill was by the school last week to pick up film on Tebo. Clemson has shown interest but has not offered which his coach says is surprising because they run an offense similar to what Clemson has done in the past, particularly when Rich Rodriguez was the offensive coordinator. Louisville was the first school to offer. Among the others are Michigan, Florida, Florida State and Georgia. Howard said Tebow has not started to narrow his list and does not have favorites. This summer Tebow will spend a month with his father on a Baptist mission in the Philippines. And his coach feels he'll get an invitation to the Elite 11 quarterback camp.

USC and Clemson are also showing interest in WR Ryan Ellis (6-3 190) of St. Augustine. He caught 70 passes for 1488 yards and 17 touchdowns last season. He's also a hurdler in track. Other schools showing early interest include Miami, Ohio State and Alabama. He has not been offered.

If SOS & Stock can bring in the talent they did in just a little over 70 days, imagine what they can do in obtaining Tebow with a little under a year's time!

Oh BTW Del/Neo, I'm gonna miss your Ace pic and the quotes...

I still have them, I rotate my signatures every few days. :D

You're not the first I've heard say that about his speed. Many have said he has SPEED TO BURN!

Rock Hill ALWAYS produces great DB's!

Neo,

Are your sources saying what their early feel is on Tebow? I know it's way to early to know, but they have to have some type of feel on Stock's early contact.

Although Tim is probably trying to keep his feelings to himself. After so many years of recruiting, I'm sure coaches have to have an instant feeling.

*Update*

Well guys, recruiting is over and now we are going into spring training pretty soon. Here's what I was told just a few minutes ago...

Expect to see Syvelle Newton at the WR position.

Jonathan Joseph has come around from breaking his foot last year and is ready to go. I am also being told that he may be used on offense and defense.

As far as I'm being told, RSF Antonio Heffner is the leading candidate for the starting QB position per Spurrier.

As of now, FR WR OJ Murdock will qualify at USC no problem and that goes for all of Spurrier's recruits for this year.

I knew you would like that. I'm not going to be able to do updates like I did during recruiting. The coaching staff has been really busy, but as I find out new stuff I will post it. :)

Well, that made my heart smile. :) By the way, I was just reading up on Heffner. Where the h*** was he last year!! LOL He sounds pretty impressive. 4'5 40 with a strong arm and can read defenses. :)

He was redshirted last year. Which in my eyes, was a smart move. Holtz had Pinkins, Newton, Mitchell and a few walkons. Why waste a year on the bench?

A lot of the Rivals.com guys compare him to a young Donovan McNabb. :D

He's a pro-styled QB. Which means he's not a Vick. He has the speed to run if necessary, but he would much rather stay in the pocket. :D

Antonio Heffner is being compared to Donovan McNabb. He's a pure pocket passer and has 4.5 speed to run if necessary. He was the 15th ranked QB in 2004.

What is with all of this "Blake envy"? The guy sucks! If you knew half of it, you would be saying the same thing.

Mitchell's problem is he's a class clown and does nothing but eat pizza, drink beer and party in 5-Points. If that punk would put down the Jack Daniels, dust off his playbook and actually look at it, he may get a shot. It doesn't start there though. He needs to quit partying so freakin much and go study some film.

From the get-go, Mitchell has been a slacker and he shouldn't be rewarded with PT for his laziness.
