May the "Smack-down" begin. This week is the weekend of redemption for the Gamecocks as they travel to Death Valley for their showdown with the Clemson Tigers. After last year's embarrassing 63-17 debacle, the Gamecocks have a taste of revenge in their mouths. Considering the lop-sided defeat at the hands of Florida, this is going to be the Gamecocks last chance at a decent bowl game. As reported by The State newspaper in Columbia, the Peach Bowl race is between USC, Alabama and Florida. All three teams are staring at a 6-5 season. “We’d like a team with seven wins,” Peach Bowl president Gary Stokan said Sunday. If USC loses, an Independence Bowl bid is almost guaranteed. “South Carolina’s very intriguing, there’s no question,” Independence executive director Glen Krupica said Sunday. “They’re great travelers, and when they have an opportunity to go to a bowl game it’s obvious that their constituents embrace it fully.” The Independence, which has a $1.2 million payout, is played Dec. 28 in Shreveport, La., against a Big 12 team. Krupica said he would like to see an SEC East team in his bowl, which has invited West teams all nine years it has been affiliated with the conference.
In USC land, this is the most important game of the year. Clemson has won the last 3 of 4 games. This game is one of those that's way too close to call. USC fell to Florida and Clemson fell to Duke. I think both teams were sleeping and got caught off guard. At 5-5, Clemson MUST win this game to have a chance at a bowl game. On the other hand, USC can relax because they are already guaranteed a post season bowl while sitting with a 6-4 record. On paper, USC holds a steady advantage but this game isn't played on paper. It's played on a very hostile and dangerous field. Honestly, I don't know if I can make an accurate prediction on this game. I'm going to go out on a limb and say USC wins in a squeaker.
