South Carolina quarterback Dondrial Pinkins has a partially torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder, an injury the team first said was a bruise. After an extensive examination, Gamecocks coach Lou Holtz said Wednesday surgery is not an option for Pinkins, and it is not known when the senior starter might get back into action. Pinkins has not played since undergoing an MRI on Oct. 4. (Alabama) Pinkins remains questionable for the Oct. 30 game against #13 Tennessee, Holtz said. South Carolina is off this week. "Dondrial cannot throw much right now. I don't know when he will be able to," Holtz said. Pinkins said he is being careful rehabilitating the shoulder so he doesn't completely tear his rotator cuff. If that were to happen, his college football career is over. Second-string quarterback Syvelle Newton also will miss practice this week with a sprained left ankle.

Blake Mitchell and Michael Rathe played quarterback for South Carolina last week against Kentucky. Rathe threw a game-winning touchdown pass in the final 2 minutes in the Gamecocks' 12-7 victory. Holtz expects Newton to be ready to play the Volunteers.
