Well, the rumor going around Columbia, SC right now is that Mr. Holtz may go ahead and retire. Beth Holtz's health has gone for the worse and Mr. Holtz has always said that he would step down if that happened. The USC AD Mr. Mike McGee is supposed to retire and Mr. Holtz is going to accept the AD position. The buzz from my sources on the street and in the university is that the informal candidates are:

Charlie Weis, Steve Spurrier, Dan Henning, Charlie Strong, Rick Minter, and Skip Holtz. The ones that the university has spoken to about this is all of the above EXCEPT Mr. Strong, Mr. Weis and Mr. Henning. After digging, I found a article that mentions that Charlie Weis is possibly the leading candidate.

What are your thoughts?

Spurrier and Strong would get my vote.

I agree with Spurrier. Not Strong though. Mr. Strong likes to run a "gimmicky" 3-3-5 defensive set and it really isn't all that great. Admit it, our defense is better now then when he was USC's DC.

I disagree. I liked Strong's D.

There might not be enough money in South Carolina for Spurrier. Charlie Strong might be a good fit.

I feel that USC needs an offensive mind to win. Our the last 5 years with the exception of last year, our defense has been in the Top-15 nationally. If we were to get an offensive genus like Mr. Spurrier or Mr. Weis, it would be explosive! Our losses would disappear quicker than a virgin on prom night.

USC has always prided itself on paying top dollar to win. Mr. Holtz is in the "millionaire" club now. Brad Scott used to be a member of the club. A lot of people say Mr. Spurrier will go back to Florida. I don't think he would. I think he would like to go back to a SEC school, but what is left for him to accomplish at Florida?

Mr. Spurrier may be a ego-maniac, but he's not a jerk. He's not going to cause Mr. Zook to lose his job. A lot of my sources are saying that he is the front runner for the USC job and everything he could want is spitting distance from Columbia, SC.

Lake Murray Golfing Resort, Augusta National, etc, etc.

Actually, he recently joined a certain club. I will leave it at that.

As a matter of fact, he just got his membership at Augusta National which is hands-down the best, most prestigous golf course in the nation.

Strong would be a definate step back, so let's stop spreading that rumor please so it doesn't come to fruition. Spurrier would be great but isn't going to happen. In fact if you ask me, Charlie Weiss will be dead in 3 years (he doesn't take care of himself and look what happened to him in 2002, he was on the brink of death), Lou Holtz is our coach this year, will be next year, and the next year after that. I think he has 2 more years left after this year. Let's stop with the rumors, and quell them before they start....

I don't think Steve Spurrier is coming back to the SEC. I just don't see it. DeLorean is right, Steve Spurrier is an ego-maniac. He cares for more than just money. Case in point, he walked away from the Washington Redskins with $10 mill or so left on his contract. He left Washington cuz he couldn't stand losing. He won't go back to the SEC because he as already dominated the SEC. He left the SEC cuz he was bored.

If Texas loses to Oklahoma here in a few weeks, I think Steve Spurrier will get a call from the Texas AD. Perfect for Steve Spurrier, great golf, a new conference, and I am sure a hefty contract would be good enough to get him.

i disagree. i think spurrier left because he was bored with florida, not the SEC. The guy loves a challege, and i think he would strongly consider coming to south carolina. the money may not be there right away, but you can bet your a** that in two or three years he would have that program in the top 15, if not the top 10 in the country. THEN, the money would come. His name alone would attract recruits from all over the country. I say the chances are not that bad.Holtz, i believe, is past his time. He has always been known to be a little pessimistic about upcoming games to the media, vis a vis his teams chances of winning, but ive heard him say on several occasions that the gamecocks were doomed when playing big name teams. That cant be good for your teams confidence.

You have to look at it this way too! Mr. Spurrier and Mr. Holtz are very good friends. Mr. Spurrier has always spoken publicly about their friendship and how he has looked up to Coach Holtz all these years. So it really isn't all that unbelievable about Mr. Spurrier taking over at USC. At least according to my sources. There have been informal talks concerning this.

What did I tell ya! September 30, 2004. That's when I first heard it through the grape vine about Mr. Spurrier.

Nice call there James. I first heard it about the middle of last month. A freind of mine at work is big in high school football here in the Midlands of Columbia and he told me a buddy of his at USC in the athletic dept told him. Get this, there's more to the story. He also says McGee will leave USC and do something with the Olympics. Guess who will be AD? Since you called it before most others, have you heard this yet James?

The former coach of the Atlanta Falcons, Mr. Dan Reeves.

No, haven't heard his name YET. I heard Lou.

It's not happening. My sources are telling me that Mr. Holtz is NOT interested and USC has had informal talks with Mr. Dan Reeves about the soon to be vacant AD position.

I'm dead serious. I don't joke about football. What I have been told is that the AD job was offered to Mr. Holtz, but he EXTREMELY expressed that he didn't want it. Over the last few weeks, USC officials have contacted Mr. Reeves to gauge his interest in the matter. Look at it this way, I heard that Mr. Spurrier was possibly coming to USC back in September and most people said I was crazy. Trust me on this. Mr. Reeves is apparently interested in the position.

People have been talking about Spurrier coming here since he left UF, but this Reeves thing is weird, I'm not so sure he would be a good fit, he seems to be a good ole boy and I think we need someone with more of a national personality(although the NFL is pretty national). Well maybe he will emphasize the USC-Clemson rivalry more....

I feel sorry for Holtz. His last game in CF and his players not only lose the game, but also make an ass of themselves and the program. If you are gonna start a fight, you should at least win it. All I saw were SC players getting thier butts handed to them all over the field. Especially that one guy in the end zone. He got, as Smokey from "Friday" would say, KNOCKED THE **** OUT, MAN!!!!

Well, if what you are saying is correct, then us pansies knocked your famed Brent Schaeffer into next week and ended his career this year with a broken collarbone. Not bad for pansies if you ask me?

Honestly though, you obviously didn't see the whole "skit" if you thought USC players were just getting beat down.

I was not talking about hits taken during the game. I was talking about the fighting that took place.

Addtionaly, we still won the game even though one of our QBs were knocked out. You guys lost by three touchdowns.

One good thing about SOS going to SC is that I believe he will have the players more disciplined. All teams have players who cross the line every now and then, but a full out brawl is unacceptable. I would say the same thing about UT.

Don't know if you were talking to me or not but yes I'm serious and yes it is a rumor. I didn't know they offered Lou the job or that he adamantly refused it. DeLorean seeems to have a good insider so I'll go with what he said.

That's B.S. I seen it go both ways. I seen tigers and Gamecocks getting the best of each other. I also seen a whole lot of cheap shots by both sides. Either way it was very disgraceful and both programs should be ashamed.

Mr. Holtz is expected to announce his retirement today at a press conference scheduled at 11am. I think ESPN NEWS is going to carry it.
