LSU recruit Carter dominates Florida prep track
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- LSU football signee Xavier Carter keeps running where no other prep track and field athletes have gone before.
Carter won the Class 3A 100-, 200-, and 400-meter state championships Friday, becoming the first athlete in Florida high school track and field history to win those three sprints in back-to-back years.
He also became the first male athlete in Florida prep track history to win the 400 four years in a row. He won the 200 as a sophomore, junior and senior and won the 100 as a junior and senior.
Carter's nine career sprint titles made him just the third male track and field athlete to win that many titles in the history of Florida high school track.
Carter won the 100 in 10.56 seconds, the 200 in 20.72 and the 400 in 45.44.
His time in the 400 is the fastest by a prep sprinter nationwide this season according to Dyestat.com, a recognized clearinghouse of prep track performances.
Carter has run the 100 in 10.38, the 200 in 20.60 and the 40-yard dash in 4.35. Subsequently, he was disappointed in his time in the 100.
"I got a bad start," Carter said. "I popped straight up coming out of the blocks. I take it as a loss (not setting a record), but I leave with a win."
A native of Palm Bay, Fla., Carter (6-foot-3, 215 pounds according to meet reports) had 33 catches for 618 yards and nine touchdowns as a senior. He also had 20 punt returns for 337 yards and seven kickoff returns for 206 yards.
Carter earned Parade and USA Today first-team All-American honors earlier this year and was rated as the nation's top wide receiver prospect by ESPN.com.
