The City of Knoxville and the University of Tennessee Athletics Department have teamed up to create a weekend-long celebration this Labor Day weekend..

The Star 102.1 Boomsday extravaganza will kick the weekend off Saturday, Sept. 4, with more than 300,000 people expected to attend. On Sunday, Sept. 5 the Tennessee Volunteers will host UNLV in their season opener before a national audience on ESPN2 beginning at 8 p.m. (EDT).

"This is a great opportunity for the city of Knoxville and the University of Tennessee to garner national exposure," said Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam. "We look forward to UT fans joining us for the Southeast's largest fireworks display."

Produced by Journal Broadcasting Group, Star 102.1 Boomsday features food, entertainment and activities throughout the day along the riverfront's Volunteer Landing.

"Last year's home opener was one of the hottest games in UT history, said UT athletics director Mike Hamilton. "Many of our fans asked us to explore the idea of playing the season opener later in the day this year. By changing the schedule, our fans will have cooler temperatures for game time while also having the opportunity to enjoy the Boomsday activities."

The University of Tennessee announced plans earlier this year for a Football Lettermen Reunion Weekend at the UNLV game. More than 300 football players are expected to attend the game. In honor of their football predecessors, current football players will don retro game jerseys from the early 1970s.

"With no NFL or college football games in the Sunday night time slot, this is a great way to honor the tradition of Tennessee football in the national spotlight as we pay tribute to the great men that laid the foundation for our program," said Hamilton.

In its 17th year, Star 102.1 Boomsday is the largest single-day event in Tennessee. Activities will begin at noon Saturday, Sept. 4, with the fireworks - synchronized to a musical soundtrack - to begin at dusk and broadcast live locally by WBIR-TV, Channel 10.

SEPTEMBER GAMES KICKOFF TIMES SET
Along with today's announcement regarding the Sept. 5 season opener against UNLV, Tennessee also announced its other start times during the month of September.

The Sept. 18 game against Florida will also kickoff at 8 p.m. (EDT) and be telecast nationally by CBS. The Homecoming contest against Louisiana Tech Sept. 25 will begin at 7 p.m. (EDT) and be telecast by VideoSeat (pay per view).

Since 1921, when the stadium opened, the Vols have traditionally been played on Saturdays, except for Thanksgiving Day games against Kentucky in 1922, 1924, 1926, 1928, 1930, 1932, 1934, 1936 and 1938 and a Friday game against Maryville Oct. 15, 1926. UT's Sept. 5 game against UNLV will be the first Sunday home game in Shield-Watkins Field history.

This year's game will be Tennessee's fifth playing date on a Sunday.

Tennessee's most recent Sunday appearance was a Jan. 2, 2000, matchup against Nebraska in the Fiesta Bowl. The Vols also met Wisconsin in the Garden State Bowl, defeating the Badgers Sunday, Dec. 13, 1981, at the Meadowlands. Two regular season games also have been played on Sunday. UT defeated Iowa Aug. 30, 1987, in the Kickoff Classic -- again, at the Meadowlands -- and tied Colorado Aug. 26, 1990, at the Pigskin Classic in Anaheim, Calif.

The Vols have played twice on the road on Thursday, in the 1991 opener against Louisville (Thursday, Sept. 5) and in 1996 against Mississippi in Memphis (Thursday, Oct. 3).
