OXFORD, Miss. -- With Friday's announcement by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that they have hired Ole Miss running backs and special teams coordinator Ron Middleton, Rebel head coach David Cutcliffe must now replace two members of his staff who helped the 2003 team to a 10-3 record, a share of the Southeastern Conference Western Division crown, and a Cotton Bowl victory.
Linebackers coach Jim Knowles was hired a week ago as the new head football coach at Cornell, returning to a school where he spent nine years as an assistant and also earned All-Ivy League honors as a player.
"I want to thank Ron Middleton for his many contributions to our football program over the last five years," Cutcliffe said. "Ron has been a valuable member of our coaching staff and his efforts and hard work have certainly been noticed by those people close to our program. We will miss Ron and his family, but we wish for them continued success as Ron returns to the National Football League, this time as a coach."
Cutcliffe said he has begun an immediate search to replace the two coaches, but would not speculate on how long the process would take.
"Your goal as a head coach is always to hire the very best people possible," Cutcliffe added. "I intend to do just that."
