BATON ROUGE -- The LSU men's basketball team, down 18 points 45 seconds into the second half, put together a strong comeback in the final 10 minutes and had the ball with a shot to tie in the final 10 seconds before falling to Global Sports, 68-64, Thursday night at the Maravich Assembly Center.
This marks the second straight year the Tigers have fallen to Global Sports in the exhibition opener and the traveling team, which goes to Purdue on Friday, is 2-2 on its current tour.
LSU was down 40-24 at the intermission after hitting just 11-of-29 shots and gave up the first basketball of the second half to go down 42-24. But LSU whittled the lead to six with 13 minutes to play, before Global ran it out to a 54-42 advantage with 8:55 to go and still had a 10-point advantage with 5:30 to play.
But the Tiger offense, working primarily with freshman in with Anthony Hudson, Xavier Whipple and Darrel Mitchell, began to take control.
Down 66-59 with 2:41 left, freshman Ross Neltner hit a trey to cut it to 66-62 with 1:45 to go as LSU called its last time out. Global failed to score and Hudson made a layup to make it 66-64 with 42 seconds to play. Global was fouled with 12 seconds to play and Calvin Warner made the second of first of two free throws to put Global up 67-64.
He missed the second and LSU rebounded and Whipple drove down court trying to find someone off a screen to get a shot off. The ball was eventually kicked away to Global in the final three seconds and Mark Green made one free throw to ice the contest.
Hudson, who hit 5-of-9 field goal attempts, led LSU with 15 points, while Brandon Bass had 11 points and a team-high eight boards as the only Tigers in double figures. Global's Jason Blair of the San Diego had 17 points, while Green of Arkansas Little Rock had 14. Chris Garner added 10.
"I thought of the first and second half the last 20 minutes our team was a lot better," said LSU Coach John Brady. "They (Global) shot 35 percent from the floor (in the second half). This team in the three games before us was shooting 50 percent from the floor against some pretty good defensive teams. We gave ourselves a chance to win.
"On the other side, we shot 57 almost 58 percent from the floor the second half, 42 from the three in the second half. Hudson made a three and we finally made some perimeter shots. We didn't get to the line as much as I would have liked (9-of-14). We didn't rebound the ball as well as I would have liked."
LSU was out rebounded 36-29 and had 15 assists and 14 turnovers, shooting 47.3 percent for the game (26-of-55). Global finished at 44 percent for the game (26-of-59) after shooting 51.6 percent in the opening 20 minutes. The visitors had nine assists and 16 turnovers.
"I thought the second half from a physical standpoint, rebounding and defending we did fine," said Brady.
LSU will have a little over a week to get ready for its next exhibition contest as the SE All-Stars come to town on Nov. 17 for a 7 p.m. game in the Maravich Center. The home opener for the regular season is Friday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. against Southern University.
