"At first, this started out just family and friends and then everybody found out," he added, nodding toward the crowd of well-wishers. "The more, the merrier."
Among them was McCarron's mother, DeeDee Bonner, who at one time didn't know whether her son would live to see his sixth birthday, much less sign a college football scholarship. McCarron was badly injured in a wave-runner accident when he was 5, a collision with a pier that left him with metal plates in his face that remain there today.
"To get to this point has been a miracle," Bonner said as her son signed autographs behind her. "He wasn't expected to live; if he did, he'd be a vegetable. To get from that point to less than a week later being released from the hospital, God's blessed him and I think God's blessed him for a reason."
