Raiders to place LB Rolando McClain on waivers
06 April 2013 - 06:15 AM
http://sports.yahoo....30797--nfl.html
The Rolando McClain era with the Oakland Raiders has come to an end as ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the club will place the 2010 first-round pick on waivers. Running back Darren McFadden is now the only Oakland first-round pick since 2000 still on the team's roster. That year, Oakland selected kicker Sebastian Janikowski with the 17th overall pick.
McClain should have no problem clearing waivers. The 23-year-old has two seasons and $10.31 million remaining on his five-year, $40.25 million rookie contract and is scheduled to earn $4.255 million in total cash compensation 2013 and another $6.055 million in 2014.
According to a source with knowledge of McClain's rookie contract, $3.635 million of the $10.31 million that remains on the contract is fully guaranteed with no offset language. Any team that willingly acquires McClain's contract, also acquires the $3.635 million in fully guaranteed base salary.
In 41 games over the last three seasons, McClain has 246 tackles, 6.5 sacks and one interception. McClain's most impressive season came in 2011 when he posted five sacks and a career-high 14 passes defensed as a 14-game starter.
McClain started nine of 11 games for the Raiders last season, totaling 62 tackles and a sack. In late November, McClain got into a verbal argument with head coach Dennis Allen and was suspended for two weeks for conduct detrimental to the team. After his suspension, McClain was inactive for the final three games of the season, setting the stage for the two sides to go their separate ways this offseason. The Raiders had granted McClain's agent, Pat Dye, to seek a trade, but with a toxic contract, a run-in with a head coach and off-field issues, there were no takers.
McClain's off-field issues began with an arrest in Decatur, Alabama in January of 2011 after allegedly pointing a gun at another man and firing it next to his head. McClain was convicted and sentenced to 180 days in jail, but upon appeal, the charges were dropped when the victim would not cooperate with the criminal case against McClain. In January of 2013, McClain was again arrested in Decatur, Alabama after giving a false name to police during a traffic stop.
While McClain's release can be considered an "addition by subtraction" for the Raiders, it is worth noting that the transaction comes on the same day that the Raiders' Bay Area neighbors San Francisco 49ers reached a five-year, $37.295 million extension with right tackle Anthony Davis, who was selected three picks after McClain in the 2010 NFL draft.
Robinson Cano hires Jay-Z

Courtesy of Robinson CanoRobinson Cano's contract talks with the Yankees will go in the direction of Jay-Z, right, the player's new rep.
"At this point in my career, I am ready to take a more active role in my endeavors on and off the field," Cano said in a statement. "I am confident that the pairing of Roc Nation Sports and CAA Sports will be essential in helping me accomplish my short- and long-term goals. I am making this important decision now so I can keep my focus on helping the Yankees succeed in 2013, while minimizing any distractions for me and my teammates."
The Yankees and Boras hadn't spoken in weeks about a new deal, a person with knowledge of the talks told ESPNNewYork.com's Andrew Marchand. The Yankees had made what general manager Brian Cashman termed "a significant offer" during the spring, but Cano had not accepted it. At this point, the Yankees do not have a read on how the move from Boras to Jay-Z will impact future negotiations.
However, when Boras clients get this close to free agency, they typically play out their contracts and test the market.
"I have not spoken to Robinson, and I hope to," Boras told ESPN's T.J. Quinn on Tuesday.
Marchand: What Does This Mean?
Does Cano's decision to leave Scott Boras for Jay-Z's Roc Nation Sports improve the Yankees' changes of re-signing the second baseman? Andrew Marchand examines Cano's agent switch. Blog
Asked if he was still Cano's agent, Boras said, "I don't want to comment, other than to say I haven't spoken to him."
It is customary for players to sign representation agreements prior to or during spring training. They run for 12 months and do allow a player to switch agents, but it doesn't void the current deal. A source told ESPNNewYork.com that Cano had signed his agreement with Boras.
It's not as if the team that will be negotiating for Cano after Boras is inexperienced, like the much-hyped partnership between Ricky Williams and rapper Master P's No Limit Sports, which resulted in one of the worst contracts in sports history. Through Roc Nation Sports, Cano also will be represented by CAA Sports' baseball group, which says it has negotiated $1.1 billion worth of deals, including four contracts (Ryan Braun, Matt Cain, Ryan Zimmerman, Buster Posey) that exceeded $100 million, in the past two years alone. CAA also represents soccer superstars Cristiano Ronaldo and David Beckham.
Sources say Jay-Z himself is planning to be a certified agent, first in baseball and eventually in basketball and football. In order to represent clients in basketball, he would have to give up his small share of the Brooklyn Nets.
Jay-Z has always had a love for sports, but his passion grew through the Nets ownership and his 40/40 high-end sports bar in New York, which over the past nine years has become a hangout for athletes.
The initial launch is with CAA, but Roc Nation Sports will be its own company. Roc Nation, which was founded in 2009, currently represents Rihanna, Shakira and Timbaland, among others.
"Because of my love of sports, it was a natural progression to form a company where we can help top athletes in various sports the same way we have been helping artists in the music industry for years," Jay-Z said in a statement.
Alabama Basketball: Anthony Grant to Interview With Minnesota?
28 March 2013 - 08:38 AM
http://bamahammer.co...with-minnesota/
Alabama Crimson Tide basketball fans might not have head coach Anthony Grant to kick around for long, if one message board poster is to be believed.
A poster on University of Minnesota-themed message board GopherHole.com has set himself up as either an oracle or a goat with a post made Wednesday night:
I can tell you at this hour my lackey down in Alabama has confirmed to me that Anthony will interview first thing in the morning with his former boss Norwood Teague. Interview will occur in Minnesota and things could close up on this pretty quick.
Alabama basketball fans continue to argue over whether or not Anthony Grant has the Tide heading in the right direction. But it’s not beyond the realm of possibility that Grant may want to explore his options with schools better known for their basketball success.
Every sport on campus in Tuscaloosa is secondary to football, at least in the minds of the vast majority of fans; this is an established fact. Alabama basketball is probably the second-most popular sport, but its fans are far fewer and are impatient with the Tide’s slow progress and seemingly unfulfilled potential.
It’s not unimaginable that Grant could look at the college basketball landscape and decide to ply his trade elsewhere. Or as coaches sometimes do, he could just be looking for a raise from the job he already has.
Then again, it could just be a rumor that will get far more attention than it deserves. After all, we have to argue about something until A-Day, don’t we?
Mal Moore in Need of a Lung Transplant
26 March 2013 - 10:14 PM
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WHNT) – According to new athletics director Bill Battle, who was introduced Friday as Alabama’s new athletics director, former UA athletics director Mal Moore is in need of a lung transplant, according to our news partner al.com.
Battle divulged the news Tuesday morning in a radio interview on The Opening Drive on Birmingham’s WJOX (94.5 FM).
“He has a lung condition and is in need of a lung transplant,” Battle said of Moore, who has been hospitalized in Durham, N.C., since March 13.
“As I understand it… he’s got to build his body up to be stronger than what it was at least a week ago to be able to handle the stress that comes with a transplant,” Battle said Tuesday. “So they told him they’re going to work him harder than he’s ever worked to get to that point.
“But getting the lung is not the end of the deal. He’s got to work harder than he’s ever worked to get back to leading a normal or relatively normal life.”
“Doctors are meeting to evaluate how much progress he’s made,” Battle said. “But Mal’s a tough guy. When I was there, he was telling me what to do. He was telling Paul Jr. what to do, and he was telling everybody else, when he got tired of everybody, he said, ‘You all need to leave. I’ve got work to do.’
“He’s got a tough and resilient spirit, and I’m confident that Mal can fight and win this thing.”
