COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Governor Nikki Haley will name Lowcountry House member Tim Scott to succeed U.S. Senator Jim DeMint, according to CNN and the NY Times.
Haley will make the announcement at noon inside the State House. DeMint and the U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham will be present during Haley's historic appointment.
Prior to being elected to Congress in 2010, Scott served on Charleston County Council for 13 years, including four terms as Chair and in the South Carolina House of Representatives for two years where he was elected Chairman of the Freshman Caucus and House Whip.
Scott will be the state's first black senator.
DeMint announced two weeks ago that he would abandon his seat to run the Heritage Foundation, a conservative Washington think tank.
Scott will fill the seat until 2014, when voters will choose who will fill the remaining two years of DeMint's term.

This is a great call on a number of levels.

-First he life is a great story of what you can do if you work hard
-He beliefs are very much in lock step with DeMints
-He is a black man

  Look out for this guy in the future.  Could be a major face of the Republican party very shortly

I don't care what color he is just hope he's a Conservative with balls.

I'm guessing you don't know much about Strom.  While he started out as an opponent to the civil rights movement, but he became one of the biggest voices for minorities in SC for decades before his death.

Thurmond appointed Thomas Moss, an African American, to his staff in 1971, described as the first such appointment by a member of the South Carolinian congressional delegation (it was incorrectly reported by many sources as the first senatorial appointment of an African American, but Mississippi Senator Pat Harrison had hired clerk-librarian Jesse Nichols in 1937). In 1983, he supported legislation to make the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. a federal holiday.^[6] In South Carolina, the honor was diluted; until 2000 the state offered employees the option to celebrate this holiday or substitute one of three Confederate holidays instead. Thurmond never explicitly renounced his earlier views on racial segregation.^{[7][8][21][22]}

Thurmond became President pro tempore of the US Senate in 1981, and held the largely ceremonial post for three terms, alternating with his longtime rival Robert Byrd depending on the party composition of the Senate. During this period, he maintained a close relationship with the Reagan White House.
Thurmond served as the ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee during the hearings on the nomination of Clarence Thomasto the US Supreme Court in 1991 and worked closely with Joe Biden, then the chairman.
