If you hadn't left the BigXII you almost certainly would be ranked #1 right now with just a crappy Texas team to beat.  And your opponent in the NCG would most likely be an undefeated Alabama team.  So was getting out of Texas' shadow worth losing your best chance at a National Championship since FDR was president?

Had they not left the Big XII, they probably would not have hired an SEC caliber coach nor recruited SEC caliber players. The SEC has tremendously helped them become who they are.

If Sumlin is able to put together a true SEC defense to match their B12 offense, there won't be a team capable of beating them next year.

When it's 3rd and 10, we shuffle out our secret weapon... he's the only person we ever want calling the next play... some call him the twelfth man.... we call him the whiskey drinker...

You make it sound like Sumlin wouldnt of been offered of accepted the job if A&M was staying in the Big 12.

No, I don't know that for sure, and didn't mean to imply that.

I just assumed that aTm knew they had to make major changes before entering the SEC causing them to reach out to Sumlin. Sort of cause and effect scenario. Was he offered the job before aTm accepted the SEC invite?

No, werent they offered the spot the entire last year that Mike Sherman was there? They knew it was a season long campaign in their final year of the Big 12, they got everyones best shot and finished 7-6.
I would of assumed they were a little worried bringing in Sumlin while moving to the SEC. But his "Big 12" style of offense showed they could win, and sure enough, against the best the SEC had to offer, they won on the road.

Looks like aTm entered the SEC around July 2011, and Sumlin accepted the aTm job sometime in December 2011.

he was a bad ass at Houston that's for sure, I just figured the administration had a good hunch he could hack it in the SEC; but I seriously doubt they dreamed he'd be this successful so soon.

2012, right? Think i got the years wrong... at any rate, I was under the assumption Sumlin was brought it because of the transition. I believe aTm would have gotten smoked week in and week out under Sherman in the SEC

Sherman's team couldnt finish. They were picked to win the Big 12 in preseason media polls in their last year. Then finished 7-6 overall.

We could be wrong on the dates, but I know what your getting at.

Sumlin accepted December 2011, aTm was an official member of SEC in July 2012. I don't know if aTm knew for absolute certain they were headed to the SEC prior to hiring Sumlin, though.

At any rate.... he's the reason for their success, and if they had the team they've got now and were in the Big 12, they'd be playing Bama in Miami.... not sure had they stayed in the B12 that they would have the team they've got now, though.

I thought he decommited from Oregon because they wanted the kid they have now more than they wanted Manziel. He wanted to go to Texas, but the Longhorns didnt even offer him.

Dunno, but I do know aTm is the hottest team in the SEC right now.
