If we sign Bourn to a one year deal (which could very well happen), who plays center field?  Bourn appears to be the better defensive player out there but considering the fact that we just signed BJ Upton, should we give him the nod in that position?

Regardless, this would allow the Braves to be competitive short term while we have all of our other pieces in place.

DOB said it would likely be:

Bourn - Upton - Heyward

Id be ok rotating them around to keep their legs fresh. Itd be a great problem to have.

The only problem with that is that the two positions are entirely different in terms of judging the ball off the bat and responsibilities. It could wind up making them both less effective if we rotate them the entire year. Obviously they're professionals and could handle it but we're probably better off if they each have a set position where they can both shine.
I kept failing a math test at the University of Alabama because every time I added 5+3 I got 8 and they kept insisting that the right answer was 14.

A legend has taken his final bow. Never again will the number 10 be worn by an Atlanta Braves player. We didn't send him out with the storybook ending he deserved, but baseball will go on.

And....one final time......

I really don't think it will effect either at all. We are taking about two of the best fielding out fielders in the game.

If we were to choose a set position you give LF to the power hitter and CF to the lead off man. BJ chilling in Lf could be great for his bat

Yeah, I think they'd handle it better than most people could for sure. If we did rotate them I think a month by month thing would be better than constant changing on a weekly basis. Give CF to one for April, June, August, the other gets May, July, and September.
And yeah I think B.J. would be better suited playing left field both because of the extra rest for him to hit better and because Bourn is a better fielder, but B.J. also needs to be ready to play CF in 2014 and beyond and if he got pissy over being moved to LF it would be a bad way to start out our franchise's relationship with him.

Either way we would have a stellar outfield both defensively and offensively so I'd be excited regardless of the alignment.

If Upton gets "pissy" over getting moved to LF then to hell with him. It says hes more worried about himself than the team.

That leaves us with around $8 million left if it comes to that. I'm sure we could talk Bourn into something around $10 million for one year if he gets desperate enough and I'm sure we could squeeze the budget up another $2 million. Let's hope arbitration falls our way though. $1-2 million could make a giant difference in this scenario. FWIW I don't see O'Flaherty, Prado, or Venters getting all that huge of a raise. Heyward and Medlen on the other hand, will probably be happy.

They either get the full arbitration amount or their current salary. Nothing in between. I forgot the actual amounts. Heyward would go up to about 3mil, prado 4mil, venters 1.5,eric o 2mil.
