I don't get it. The GA dome isn't old. Why the need for a new one?

Granted I've never been to the GA dome so it may be a shit hole

It's not a shit hole by any means, but it's nothing special by design. It was intended as a multi-purpose facility, primarily for football but the Falcons owner just recent spent millions to renovate it just to make it look like it was actually the home of the Falcons and not the non-descript generic looking venue it was before. It's not a bad venue at all, but you won't come away feeling like "man, that's an awesome stadium."

A big reason they want a new stadium is because it just seems silly that we're playing football in the South and don't even have the option to open the roof. It's a shame to be playing indoors with all the beautiful weather we have here during football season.

The biggest problem with the dome is location, and that isn't even going to get changed with the new venue since it's going in right across the street. Blame Atlanta politicians for that. The Atlanta Sports council continues to strong-arm all the pro franchises into building within the same damned square mile of each other, contributing to the nightmarish traffic situation and ensuring that everyone finds it a pain in the ass to get to a game.

There is no reason why they should build another stadium. It is nothing but a extra tax on the taxpayers who come here to do any kind of business. The dome is fine how it is, it's just the Falcons are whiny bitches who want things to be the best. The dome was built not only for the NFL but it is used so much during the year with different events, it was built to satisfy the needs of everyone. If Blank wants a new stadium then him and and his buddies need to find some corporate partners and they need to cut a check.

If they don't build it in Atlanta, one of the surrounding cities in the metro area would be more than happy to have them build it there, and then Atlantans would bitch at all the revenue they'd lose to said city when they start getting National Championship games, World Cup matches and Super Bowls and Atlanta gets zilch.

But what metro area has te nfl not tapped into? The only two that come to mind are LA and Las Vegas.

Las Vegas is a no go for obvious reasons and LA will likely host the Jaguars in a few years.
Plus what about the lease? What contractual language does it contain that allows them to opt out? Or does it end soon?

I don't really think the Falcons have much leverage. I'd rather see a new baseball stadium built mainly because the Ted is boring and too big. But that won't happen for a long time

I didn't mean a different metro area, I meant another city in the Atlanta area. One of the surrounding suburbs (plenty of NFL teams go that route, i.e. New England). Not sure about the current lease but I know it's ending soon.

Just imagine if Atlanta got the bid. The rest of the world would hate the SEC after hosting 2 NCs in the same city, in the same year

I feel like it should be a centrally located game. It's hard for fans in the Pacific Northwest to travel to places like Miami and Atlanta.

Indianapolis should get a strong look. If the 6 sites were Miami,NO,Dallas,Pasadena,Phoenix and Indianapolis that would be pretty fair geographically.

There are always cheap flights to Dallas, Phoenix, and Chicago.  No domed stadium leaves Chicago out.  I say play it at Jerry World.

Gotcha. So say like Alpharetta or Buckhead? Or is Buckhead considered Atlanta?

Not sure, honestly. But yeah I was thinking like Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Buford, Suwanee, Marietta, etc.... some where OTP (outside the perimeter)

I can say from experience that the Fiesta bowls sucks. Everything is so spread out around the city, and the stadium is meh. Plus it don't hold that many people.

i dont think so...i really like the university of phoenix stadium where the cards play.  its a very nice stadium and almost every seat is a good one, including their version of the "nosebleeds".  and youre talking about one of the fastest growing and one of the biggest cities in the nation with phoenix.  lots to do there.  rent a car or take a taxi if you dont want to walk.  i can assure you that youd be doing the same no matter where the game was played.

If Atlanta would have moved forward with the new Falcons stadium already, they'd be a lock to get it. Sadly, they haven't, so expect Jerry World to get it.

Agreed! And I don't even think the NCAA is seriously considering anywhere else.

From geography to the city and venue and then especially to the fact that the last two big season opening games (LSU-Oregon and Bama-Michigan) were huge successes, I'll be absolutely shocked if another city besides Dallas is announced as the winner.

Totally side with you in spirit but the Falcons (or any NFL team) really have all the leverage. There is nothing, no number of college games, etc that comes close to the revenue generated by having an NFL team in your city. There just isn't. The city knows this and KNOWS that they'll eventually have to cave. If not, the Falcons will be gone and the city will lose MUCH more in the long run than they would have had they simply agreed to build it. And before you say it would never happen, look no further than the Oilers in Houston and Sonics in Seattle.
Both cities stubbornly held their ground and ended up (will end up) paying MUCH more in the long run to get a team back.
Morally and ethically I think it's 110% wrong to use public monies for these things, but by the same rights I benefit VERY little from what public money IS used for so since that's not gonna change anytime soon, might as well have it go to something I enjoy!
Finally, should the Falcons keep winning and make it to New Orleans..... expect this topic to take center stage come February!
