Someone sheluvsbama and I know just had her first book published. It's a children and young person's book with a fun, compelling adventure story and a fascinating, educational topic and setting. The ideal age group for the book is probably age 7 - teens, but others might enjoy it as well; so if you're a parent with kids that age or a young member of the site, you should give it a look.

while I'm sure she hasnt disclosed to you the financial aspects of her relationship with the publisher, I've always wondered how that worked for a new author with a first book

I'm not really sure either; but I imagine they see how the first one goes and then the author can kind of negotiate depending on how successful it is.

I do know it's a lot harder to actually get published than I ever imagined; there are a lot of manuscripts floating around out there with no takers from publishing companies.

Does it explain why the Egyptians and the Mayans built similar structures despite being on the opposite sides of the world?

It looks like it is on Amazon; I know she said electronic versions would be available.

I hate to admit it, but some of my nieces and nephews are more technologically advanced than I am these days; and I thought I'd send several of them copies for Christmas, so I need to find out which ones would prefer the regular book and which ones would prefer the electronic version.

Great timing on the release, both because of Christmas and because of the significance of 12-21-2012. Both the Bible and Mayan calendar mention the date prominently.

That's pretty cool. Like haymaker I've always wondered how that works. I'm interested in writing as a hobby (and if I didn't suck a career) but have no idea how a lot of the publishing stuff works and what kind of education I should go after.

If you're really interested in something along those lines as a career, I imagine you'd want to take English Lit. and creative writing courses; along with maybe some poetry and maybe even some journalism, in the event you're not sure what you'd like to try writing.

Plenty of guidance counselors out there could lead you in the right direction. Even if somebody never gets published, lots of people just enjoy the creative process and writing for their own benefit.
