A shoulder contusion kept South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw out for only part of Thursday’s win against Vanderbilt, but it certainly hampered his effectiveness.
Shaw threw for only 67 yards against the Commodores — it should be pointed out he wasn’t having a great game throwing the ball before he was injured, either — but there was no questioning his toughness. Shaw ran the ball with reckless abandon, though he might be paying for it later.
“It’s just painful for him,” Steve Spurrier said Sunday. “And he has trouble lifting his arm right now so it’s pretty hard to play quarterback.”
Shaw took a lot of shots during the second half of Thursday’s game. He was in visible pain for much of the night.
Spurrier added that playing Shaw against East Carolina was a “wait and see” situation. For now, Shaw will miss at least a couple of practices. If he can’t go against the Pirates, backup Dylan Thompson could get the start.

i may be wrong but when it happened it appeared to me he took a knee to the back just under his shoulder blade. I bet he has a hell of a knot right there. whirlpool and rub downs will help a lot but who knows when that knot would loosen up.

I say go ahead and play Nosovitch without worrying about trying to get him a redshirt. His motion isn't the prettiest thing in the world right now, but he's faster than Thompson and has a stronger arm.

This is where it pays off to actually start against a decent opponent, because now we have 2 easily winnable games before taking on Mizzou at home. It just sucks if Shaw has to sit for a game because it takes away an opportunity for him to work on his timing with WR's in real game action.

Said it's a deep bone bruise. We have ECU and UAB the next 2 weeks. We should be alright with Connor not seeing much action. DT is a much better QB than he showed against Vandy, and I think 2 soft defenses will help him out if he needs to start both games. It would do Connor a ton of good to rest his arm a couple weeks until Mizzou

Yeah, caused a bruise...and probably a hell of a bruise from the looks of it. Now like you said it's probably knotted all to hell. I'm sure they'll be working it out, but in the meantime he probably won't be doing a lot other than letting it loosen up.

He was effective against Vandy but if he keeps playing the way he is, hes gonna hurt himself seriously. Vandy doesnt have the size on defense some of the other SEC teams do. Gonna have to make adjustments to his game or he is going to hurt more than just his arm. Guess the Ole ball coach is glad now that USC doesnt play UGA the 2nd game of the season. Since he decided during the offseason to make a comment about UGA's suspended players.

Hope Shaw makes a full recovery because he seems like a good kid and has got tremendous heart to play as injured as he was

Shaw is a tough dude. If he's not hurting bad on Saturday, he will start. If not, I'm confident that Dylan Thompson will get it done vs. ECU. The way Shaw plays we are gonna need Thompson ready to go at any given time. Shaw will hopefully be 100% for our next SEC game vs Mizzou on 9/22.

If Shaw doesn't learn to get the Original Image: http://www.sectalk.c.../lanekiffin.gif down properly, it could very well cost USC an SEC game we would've won otherwise. That's the way it goes though...sort of a "live by the gun, die by the gun" philosophy....more like "live by the QB run, die by the QB run" for us.

Agreed. I'm sure as hell glad we don't play yall next week and I'm sure Spurrier would agree. With zone read being such a big part of our offense I don't expect him to cut back a lot on that, but Shaw has got to slide with his feet. Hell, in college you're down as soon as you hit the ground anyway...seeing as how he's all of 6'1" I don't see how that half a yard gained by going head first is worth the risk. Vandy has a fiery attitude, but like you said Shaw will be running towards much bigger players in Oct. Hopefully this whole thing will be a good lesson for him.

What i heard was that Spurr encourages Shaw to slide head first. Its not even about yardage. If he baseball slides yea the play dies but if a player hits him during the slide its 15 yards. Yea you give up a yard or so but you save yourself from a beating. As big as some of the Dbacks and Lbackers are in the SEC he can get messed up

I read earlier that Nosovitch isn't even in consideration for playing time this year. They like him long term, but the article said he got very few reps in fall practice so it would take a string of injuries and/or horrific performances to burn that redshirt.

Sounds like Shaw is probably going to play on Saturday anyway. It's a pain tolerance issue more than limited movement. There's no structural injury. If it turns out he does need a week off, Spurrier said today that Dylan Thompson is still next in line, which I'm fine with. Yeah he looked terrible last week, but he played in some more favorable scenarios last season and handled it well. He's going to get a lot more run with first team this week too.

As for Shaw's playing style, there's no doubt people are going to be gunning for him. But he started 8 games last year playing the exact same style without getting hurt. I doubt everyone was avoiding hitting him last year.

Spurrier has said that in interviews before and after the injury. The only time I can remember him sliding feet first is in the Clemson game when he already gained 25 and saw a big hit coming.

SOS started telling his QBs to slide head first with Garcia. He notice to just about always gives them an extra yard or two. I don't think he will tell Connor to switch it up.
