Well I am just outside the reach of DSL at my house...... they say the slots are full. "Think of it like a parking lot full of cars" Well I say, EXPAND THE F'ING PARKING LOT! I swear to God I hope AT&T goes under, and quick.... worst company I have ever seen..... terrible in every sense of the word.
Anyway, right now the only option I have is tethering my phone to computer so I can get unlimited (3g in my area, be another year for 4g) and we have a MiFi thing but I don't use cause we only have 5 GBs data on it.
Soo, my only options are satellite internet (Hughesnet/Wildblue), anyone have any experience with satellite internet? Thing that sucks is the both have pretty sucky caps, which I need for downloading lectures for school.

Hey Gator,
I did some research into this a while back.. It seems that the satellite internet around here is nothing more than a reseller of local interweb services.
ie. I looked into DirectTV & Dish satellite internet services. They are basically reselling local cable internet at a higher price, so I just went with the local cable company.
If you go with the satellite, you'll likely get the local internet services that will not serve you, and you'll get it at a higher price.
I would look into some sort of wifi enhancer cable/antenna and see if you can borrow from one of your neighbors - or offer to pay them 1/2 the bill for access to their interwebs.

I have HughesNet cause we can't get DSL either. It's worth it cause we used to have dial-up. That said, it's still shitty. It's at least wireless though. Never heard of Wildblue.
ing disgrace the way AT&T simply refuses to give us access though. We have been calling about it for about 5 years and they have outright lied to us before saying we would have access at one point but the time came and still no.
If there was ever a presidential candidate that ran on a platform of getting high-speed internet to everyone nationwide I would vote for him just because of that. Even Obama.

Yea I was looking into Hughesnet too. Wildblue has a service right now that is 12mb/s which is really fast, but the reasonably priced plan only gives me 15gb/month, hell I'd break that in 2 weeks easy during the school year.
Something you might be interested in and the only thing keeping me from getting WB, hughesnet just launched a new sat that is supposed to be WAY better than anything offered now and they are offering free upgrades to some. Will be until Oct before they start offering service from it though

My nearest neighbor is probably about 1/2 mile, so I doubt that would be an option.

It's about supply and demand. Minimize the supply and keep price high.

The biggest problem with dsl is there is a distance limitation on copper cable fed customers. The further out,the more resistance thus lesser speed or issues of dropping sync.I think 17 thousand feet from the office equiment is the cut off point they will serve. They use their wireless network as a backup to those they can't reach and truth be known they would drop all wirelines and go all wireless if they could find someone to take the exchanges, especially smaller ones, off their hands.

Buyer beware would be my advice when dealing with companies like Hughesnet or Wildblue. I ran on a 56k dial-up connection for many years and I remember doing some research into these satellite providers and the final decision I made after looking into it was to stay with my crappy dial-up connection.
I recall seeing high set up costs, high monthly costs, relatively slow and unreliable connections, and small bandwidth limits.
Unless these companies have changed their business models over the last few years then I wouldn't expect to do any online gaming, any major video streaming, or any major downloading with these services. If your looking for something that will allow you faster access to basic web browsing and email servies then these will fit that bill, but if you're looking to do any heavy internet usage then I'd do some homework before investing in any of these internet servies.
I've never actually had any of these and so all my info comes from what I remember of my research. Someone feel free to correct me if they've had a different experience with them.

I've spent hours researching them both. My 3g service works ok for now, just wish I could get DSL. 4G will be here by the end of next year but thats a long time to wait when I am trying to download lectures.
I could have a T1 line for 300/month haha

The internet infrastructure suck bad in my area too.
The United States is among the worst developed nations in terms of high speed internet availability and it's costs. Unfortunately things don't seem to be improving very fast either.

Verizon may be the best option to come. Their 4g network will be everywhere 3g is by the end of next year. Now that AT&T does not have the Iphone locked down anymore maybe they will tank

Where I live we get no cable companies (comcast or charter) so all we have is DSL (AT&T) even though the subdivision across the street gets cable...
Anyways, a couple of my friends bought a townhouse a few houses down from us and AT&T told them the same bs about it being full and no slots. They have Hughesnet set up, but for the past couple of days it's been intermittent. They say they get internet for about 10 minutes then it goes out.
