Lets be serious... Oxford has impoverished areas just like any other town in the south. I've seen it with my own 2 eyes.
Definitely. But its far less. I don't know this for fact but I'd think Oxford has the highest wealth per capita in the state by a wide margin.
@shamoan, Cant argue with any of your opinions. Ridgeland is definitely nice these days but is more of a suburb than town. I've actually never been to Natchez

While we are talking about Oxford, it angers me that enrollment is getting above 20k. When I was a freshman 6 years ago there were a total of 12k students and the university and town were perfect. Now its too crowded. You can't go anywhere without traffic and parking difficulties. Every restraurant has a wait. The bars continuously stay overcrowded. It's ruining things. The place can't hold that many folks. It's not like the campus can expand due to the city being wrapped around it. But they just built 3 new huge ass dorms! Old Taylor rd and Jackson are already a pain in the ass. And they are just building more and more apartments and condos. In 5 years Oxford will be one big ol waiting line.

If we have a game up there again, I'll try to see the town and the campus.
Gainesville is pretty pedestrian; nothing special at all. The best place to eat is (was, they had a fire recently) Satchel's Pizza. The campus, which is pretty neat, is dominated by the stadium plus some nice lakes here and there.
I agree about Auburn; it's a beautiful campus with a great feel to it. I've been there a number of times.
I've also been to Georgia, Alabama, and LSU; no contest, LSU is by far the prettiest campus.
I hear that the Arkansas campus and Fayetteville are really nice. I hope to go there some day.
I've been to Vanderbilt and it is just okay as a campus; pissy stadium, but the town of Nashville is great.
Never been to Columbia or Lexington or Knoxville.

Wikipedia say Oxford has poverty rate at 32.2%. Starkville is 31.1%. Compare that to 2.5% for Madison or 6.0% for Brandon.

It's intriguing to me that celebs like Eli Manning and news anchor Shepard Smith sing the praises of Oxford. I've never really been there; I did go to a football game, but we stayed in Tupelo and really didn't see anything but the stadium. What is it that makes these folks crazy about Oxford?
It's the old south.
The Grove.
My wife and I went there to see a UK/UM football game about 12 years ago and LOVED the place. The people were over the top nice and the town is beautiful. Not to mention The Grove. She still says one of our kids HAS to go to school there.
The second one (suck up)...has already volunteered.
