ATHENS, Ga.—The University of Georgia Athletic Association along with the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia are teaming up to alleviate hunger by hosting a canned food drive at the 2012 G-Day Game on Saturday, April 14 at 3 p.m.

“Through this food drive, we have an opportunity to bless people within the local community with thousands of meals,“ said Georgia football head coach Mark Richt

Now in its fourth year, fans are asked to bring in a bag of canned food to be admitted to the annual game. Bins will be set up at the Main Gate as well as gates 2, 4, 6 and 9 to accept the canned goods. Donation stations will also be in place for monetary contributions, as one dollar equals four pounds of food. All canned food and proceeds will go to assisting families in Northeast Georgia.

“The 12,000 pound goals set by the Athletic Department will provide more than 9,000 meals,” said President of the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia John Becker. “This is a significant food drive for us, and we are grateful for the support of the UGA Athletic Department and the fans.”

Founded in 1993, the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia annually distributes more than 9.2 million pounds of food to more than 230 community-based hunger-relief organizations in Northeast Georgia.  In addition to food distribution, the Food Bank leads five direct distribution programs: The Mobile Pantry Program, The Brown Bag Program, The Stock the Pantry Program, The Kids Cafe, and the Food 2 Kids Program.  For more information about the Food Bank, call (706) 354-8191 or visit www.foodbanknega.org.
