Game Notes_UAB

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Following the second week of SEC play, Alabama will play four road games this week. UA opens the week at Regions Park in Hoover, Ala., against the UAB Blazers on Tuesday, March 27. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Alabama will travel to Knoxville, Tenn., for a three-game weekend SEC series against Tennessee beginning on Friday.

All games for the 2012 season will be broadcast on the Crimson Tide Sports Network. The game against UAB can be heard on WFFN-FM 95.3. Chris Stewart and Lee Tracey will provide the radio commentary for the game at Regions Park.  Live stats will be available at RollTide.com.

Alabama enters this week with a 9-15 overall record, after posting a 1-3 record last week. Following a 9-0 loss at Troy, the Tide won one of three games at home against No. 17 Mississippi. Freshman catcher/outfielder Ben Moore continues to lead the team with a .321 batting average. Moore is second on the team with 15 runs and six doubles, and is third on the squad with 27 hits and 12 RBI. After leading the Tide with a .417 average against Mississippi, Taylor Dugas is hitting .318 for the season and leads the team with seven doubles and 16 runs scored.  Dugas reached base in all three games of the Mississippi series, and has now reached base safely in all 24 games this season. Including the last 12 of the 2011 season, he’s reached base in the last 36 games.

Justin Kamplain was named the SEC Freshman of the Week on March 26. In his only start of the week, Kamplain threw a career-high 7.0 innings on Saturday, as the Crimson Tide defeated No. 17 Mississippi, 3-2. Kamplain carried a no-hitter into the seventh, before allowing a leadoff single to start the inning. He retired the first 14 batters he faced in the game, before allowing one of his two walks with two outs in the fifth. In his 7.0 innings, Kamplain allowed two runs on three hits with a career-high tying six strikeouts

UAB enters Tuesday’s game with a 16-9 overall record. The Blazers are coming off a 2-1 weekend against Marshall to open Conference USA play. The Blazers dropped the opening game of the series, 7-5, then posted back-to-back 5-1 wins to capture the series victory. UAB is hitting .271 as a team, while averaging 4.9 runs and 9.2 hits per game.  The pitching staff is holding opponents to a .235 batting average with a 3.36 ERA. The Blazers are allowing 4.1 runs and 8.0 hits per game.

Ivan De Jesus leads the team with a .320 average, while starting 23-of-25 games this season. De Jesus leads the team with 31 hits, including two doubles and one triple. He’s scored 11 runs and has nine RBI, and he is 5-for-6 in stolen base attempts. Jeff Schalk is hitting .307 for the season to rank second on the squad, but leads the team with 13 walks for a team-high .418 on-base percentage. Patrick Palmeiro, son of Rafael Palmeiro, leads the team with nine doubles and 16 RBI. Palmeiro, who is hitting .258, has one of the team’s five home runs this season.

UAB will start right-handed pitcher Tanner Bryant on Tuesday night.  Bryant enters Tuesday’s game with a 1-0 record and a 1.88 ERA in eight appearances with four starts. Bryant has allowed 10 runs (five earned) on 26 hits with 17 strikeouts and seven walks in 22.2 innings pitched this season.  In his most recent start, Bryant lasted 4.1 innings against Penn State on Mar. 11. Bryant allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits with five strikeouts and two walks to the Nittney Lions in a no decision.

In a series that dates back to 1974, Tuesday’s game between Alabama and UAB will mark the 60th game played between the two schools. Alabama holds a 42-17 advantage in the series overall. The teams played twice during the 2011 season, with each team winning its home game. Alabama defeated the Blazers 6-3 at Sewell-Thomas Stadium, while UAB posted a 5-1 win in the game played at Regions Park. UA is 3-2 in the last five games versus UAB and 8-2 in the last 10 games against the Blazers. UA head coach Mitch Gaspard is 1-3 all-time against UAB, including a 1-2 record in two years at Alabama.

The Tide returns to SEC play when it travels to Knoxville, Tenn., to take on the Tennessee Volunteers for a three-game set.  First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 5 p.m., game two on Saturday will be televised on CSS and starts at noon and Sunday’s game will begin at 1 p.m. All times at Tennessee are Central Daylight Time.
