So the wife gets a text message from a Yonkers New York area code today that says:

Say hi to Caroline for me. (Caroline is our 3 year old)

my wife: okay I will! Who is this? : )

response: : )

So when asked who the :lanekiffin: is this they respond with a smilie face???

And we don't know anyone who moved to or is from New York.

The other question is: how do they get my wife's cell?

I'm thinking someone who drives a free candy van.

There are ways to back track that.  I certainly would if that was someone doing that to my son.

Dude, If you don't know and your spooked call your State CyberCrimes Unit with your State Police and and find out before something really weird happens. You better be monitoring your Facebook, Twitter and credit reports. They could be verifying info on you.

Could be someone playing a prank but this falls into call the police territory.

yeah, its more likely an Identity theft issue than it is a child safety issue, but better safe than sorry on all accounts. Its similar to some fishing scams we studied back in school.

I am a telecom network engineer 30 years + with some of the biggest and best companies. Law Enforcement can track that shite within minutes of a police report. State Level CyberCrimes is the fastest route because they are hooked into the Fed's network database. Don't play just do it, we are talking about your family.

This.

I find some creep texting my wife about my little girl, his best bet is to turn himself in before I find him. I'm perfectly fine with spending the rest of my life in prison if it means some perv who's set his sights on my little girl is dead by my hand before he gets a chance to make his move.

Ehhh, better safe than sorry...but don't freak out yet.  I had something similar happen to us last year, but it turned out to be a harmless aunt who moved and sucked at texting.
