BATON ROUGE - Greg Shaw, a senior offensive tackle on the LSU football season, did not allow the completed season to withhold him from achieving even more accolades. He, along with four other LSU agricultural business undergraduates, comprised the winning team of the 2012 National Grocers Association Annual Convention.

The National Grocers Association, or NGA, represents locally owned or community based grocery stores, and the aim of the case study was to develop a mobile coupon promotional strategy for a 10-store independent grocery operation.

Shaw's team presented their study at NGA's Annual Convention in Las Vegas, Nev., from February 12-15, soaring through the preliminary and final rounds. Their presentation was judged by independent grocery store owners as well as executives at Kellogg. Up against seven of the other top food and agribusiness programs in the country, they pulled a first place finish.

Their win was recognized at the 2012 NGA Chairman's Dinner and Gala, and later encored at the following NGA general session "How to Capitalize on the Digital Coupon Revolution: From Print at Home to Mobile."

Along with Shaw, other members of the team were Kaitlyn Dunn, Alexander Guinn, Cassandra Rideau and Rawley Webber. The team's advisors included Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness's Dr. R Wes Harrison and Dr. Josh Detre.

"Our students competed against some of the best and brightest undergraduate students from across the country," Dr. Detre said. "To come away as champs is a testament to both their hard work and to the quality education they are receiving in in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness."

Along with the assistance of their advisors, the team was also heavily supported by the Associated Grocers of Baton Rouge and their president, Jay Campbell, as well as Don Welge, President of Gilster-Mary Lee Corporation.

"Our team put in a huge amount of time preparing for this competition," Dr. Harrison said. "They worked very hard and deserve much of the credit for this achievement. I'm very proud of these young people and the recognition they bring to our academic programs in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness and LSU."
