ATHENS --- University of Georgia sophomore forward Marcus Thornton will undergo exploratory surgery Tuesday to determine the extent of an injury to his right knee, head coach Mark Fox announced today.

Thornton, a 6-7 native of Atlanta, injured his knee in the first half of Georgia's 64-50 win over Furman last Friday.  He did not return to the game after leaving the court with 12:58 to play before halftime.  He will have the surgery performed at St. Mary's Hospital in Athens on Tuesday morning.  A determination on Thornton's recovery time will be made following surgery.

Despite the injury, Thornton remains Georgia's leading rebounder at 5.8 rebounds per game.  He also averages 2.8 points per contest and has started nine of the Bulldogs' 12 games.

The Bulldogs complete their non-conference schedule with a pair of home games this week:  Tuesday vs. Winthrop at 7:00 p.m. and Friday vs. Delaware State at 2:00 p.m.
