BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Ole Miss point guard Jarvis Summers has been rewarded for his outstanding performances in road wins over DePaul and Penn State, as he was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week on Monday.

Summers, a 6-foot-4, 184-pound floor general, was averaged 19.5 points, three rebounds, three assists and 1.5 steals this past week. He poured in a career-high 27 points, the most by a Rebel this season, in a 72-70 win at Penn State. He made 10 of 16 shots from the field, 4 of 5 from behind the arc and 3 of 4 from the charity stripe, while adding four rebounds and three assists in an all-around quality floor game. With his team down 70-69 and 34 seconds remaining, Summers made a big-time drive to the basket for a layup-and-one to provide the winning 72-70 margin.

The Jackson, Miss., native also posted 12 points, three assists and two steals and tied the game at 68-68 with a clutch jumper in a 70-68 win at DePaul.

Summers has started each of the last four games at point guard for his home state team. Through eight games, he is averaging 11.3 points and a team-leading 2.9 assists per outing.

This is the second straight week for a Rebel to be honored by the league office. Murphy Holloway was last week's SEC Player of the Week after big outings in wins over TCU and Miami.

Ole Miss has won four straight games and improved to 7-1 on the year. After this week's final exams, the team will return to its home court on Saturday against Mississippi Valley State.
