I'm pretty sure we have seen the last of the Governor's charm.

He's turned. He will now be an unabashed dictator willing to do anything and everything to protect his power- without the veil of 'charm' we've already seen.

I definitely get that. But is the gov in control of his emotions and enough of a manipulator to have maybe told Merle this was his one chance to get back into his good graces. Infiltrate the prison and turn it over to me. You and your brother get to live. He'd have no problem going back on his word later, but is he in control of himself enough to form such a plan under duress?

My wife got The Walking Dead Compendium 1 as one of my Christmas gifts

Its crazy how much different the comics were to the show. Both are very satisfying, and can stand-alone to the point that those who love the show can still appreciate the comic, and vice-versa.

I also purchased The Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor, which is an actual novel which focuses on how the Governor became who he is, a completely separate story-line from Rick and crew. Haven't started it yet, but looking forward to soon.
