well im officially on the market now...i would prefer not to break the bank as i am really only going to use it for self protection...i dont have a shotgun anymore because i dont hunt and the one i had was a hand me down that i left for my dad so im thinking a pistol is the way to go...my buddy has a glock and loves it...my coworker said he has a taurus and loves it for the money...never heard anything about taurus's until now but if its a good quality for a better price, i'm all for it...thoughts on taurus??...

i've read this thread and am going to try to get to the range to shoot some of them but i feel like my time will be limited for that...i'm really not wanting to spend more than 300-400 and it might be me just getting one from my cop friend but we'll see...i think one option is a compact ruger but i could be wrong...thoughts on that??

Taurus are hit and miss.  Some work fine, some dont.  Generally I'd say stay the hell away from Taurus if possible.  Raising your price to 500 would be ideal, as you would be able to buy a Glock, Smith and Wesson M&P, Springfield XD, or FNH.  All would be great choices for what you want.  If you have a cop buddy, GO THROUGH HIM.  They get great discounts on the gun and accessories.  I want to say they get Glocks for $410.  If using for self defense, consider getting one with nightsights or adding them later.  Its not hard to change the sights.  I'd aim for either a .40 or .45.  I'm a .45 guy, but capacity is greater with a .40.

I absolutely love my Springfield XD.  I have a 9mm... and that's the only thing I'd change.  I like having the 9mm for cheap ammo to shoot, but I'd have gotten a .40 or something if I knew I was going to rely on it for self defense.  Now I'm in the market for a new one as well.... actually have my sights set on 2 more pistols I want, then will probably call it quits, for now.

-Small, concealable gun for carry... preferably .38 sp or .380 auto.

and

-mid-larger caliber... most likely a .45.  Really want a 1911 (who doesn't?), but I'm not up to date on good models/brands for good prices.

GR, give me some suggestions.  Don't really care what my concealable gun is... proabably just going to go relatively cheap there.

If you want a .380, that S&W Bodyguard .380 is pretty nice.  Compact with a built in laser sight...

For your CCW, I'd stay at least with a 9mm considering they make them so small these days.

If you buy a .45, its just got to be a 1911.  They are about all I shoot these days because they are the most enjoyable and fun to shoot.  Plus they are addictive.  There are a hundred different models and 15 or so companies that make them.  To begin there, you'd have to figure out your price range and the exact features you want.  They range from $400 to $5000.

What about the $600-$900 range?

What about the $600-$900 range?

Several good options.

Springfield makes 3 models in this range: MilSpec, Loaded, and Range Officer.  All offer different features and are great guns.  Springfield also has the best warranty and customer service in the business...bitching custom shop too.  I own a Springfield and love it to death.

STI Spartan or Trojan.  There are a lot of people who swear by STI.  Personally I have never shot one but plan on getting one someday just to see what all the hype is about.  They have ugly roll marks but are supposed to be exceptionally made.  I know STI parts are top notch.

Colt Series 70 or 80.  I'd stick with the series 70.  Old school 1911 with the duckbill and short trigger.  Many claim this to be the "original".  Colts are just solid all the way around.  Can't go wrong with one

Kimber Custom II.  Nice gun but seems to be just hit and miss.  Some people have a million problems with them, others work perfectly.  Their customer service isn't great and they use plastic mainspring housings lol.  But that's no big deal.  I'd buy one, but it wouldn't be at the top of my list.

Sig Sauer and S&W.  Don't know too much about them.  The new kids on the block.  They stray from the original design a tad by using an external extractor.  They are visually stunning though...beautiful guns and you get a lot of features for a good price.  I just really don't know too much about them

You may could find a used Dan Wesson or Springfield TRP in the price range.  I doubt it though.

If I had to rank the choices:
1. Trojan
2. Range Officer
3. Loaded
4. Spartan
5. Series 70

The trick to getting a good 1911 is to get one that's of good manufactured quality but is not "tricked out" with all the new bells and whistles.  The farther you get from John Moses original design, the lower the reliability is in general.

The exceptions to this are:

Make sure the barrel is properly throated.  The original design is intended to function optimally with military FMJ ammunition and does not work as well with HP.

Make sure the feed ramp is properly polished for the same reason as above.

An extended or beaver tail grip safety can make your grip better preventing limp wristing.

In addition, make sure your magazine have the dimple in the follower.  No dimple = stovepipe jams on the last round.  Every manufacturer under the sun has tried to come up with super-mags that prevent stovepipes and the best is still the solution John Moses came up with 100 years ago...

I'm a simple guy, I have a Ruger .357 revolver. I like to take it to the backyard and blow the shit out of stuff, it's simple like me.

As far as Taurus goes, I love my Judge Public Defender. Chambers both .45 and 2.5" .410 rounds, and you can alternate. (I've got three 000 buckshot in succession and then two .45 hollow points to clean everything up).

Its more of a car gun than anything. Its small enough to conceal but its on the bulky side. Honestly I wouldn't want anything else. Handheld scatter-gun means you're not likely to miss when its either you or him. Buckshot spread isn't as wide as most reviews would have you believe. And then if for some reason buckshot isn't going to do the job you have the option of using the big .45 rounds.

My only complaint about this gun is that certain .45 rounds won't fit correctly into the cylinder, so its best to half cock the weapon to see if the round will advance before leaving the round in for personal protection.

I highly recommend for the money the Taurus PT92....same gun as the Baretta 92...I have one and have run an easy 1000 rounds through it with nary a hiccup. Beautifully balanced pistol and you can run any 9mm ammo through it.

I'd also recommend the Taurus 1911 as it's already had a LOT of trick work done to it and you can buy them new for $575...an absolute bargain. My pocket pistol is a Sig Sauer P238 .380...great little pocket rocket that feels good in your hand and again is balanced fantastic...plus it has something most ALL pocket pistols don't have...a thumb safety. This gun looks like a mini 1911. They are a bit pricey but they are well built and compared to the other pocket pistols.

Ultimately it's what feels best in YOUR hand and reliable, I also love my little Rossi .38 special, great little gun.

Shits awesome. We actually went out to the country to shoot today.

What's incredible is how accurate it is at range with .45 rounds and just a 2.5" barrel. And its just dead sexy blued with a wood handle. This is what mine looks like.
