Major League Baseball came calling, but Shon Carson was not impressed. After being drafted in the 44th round by the Cincinnati Reds, the Lake City High star told WPDE NewsChannel 15 that he has decided to attend South Carolina rather than accept an offer to become a professional baseball player.

Carson says the Reds have not made an offer, but typically the bonus money is nominal. Carson committed to the Gamecocks last year after the football team upset then #1 Alabama. He later signed a national letter of intent with the Columbia school. He will play running back for Steve Spurrier and will pull double duty for Ray Tanner's baseball team.

Carson won the 2010 WPDE Zoneman award, given to the area's best high school football player each year. He ran for 2,280 yards and 33 touchdowns his senior season for the Lake City Panthers. The Scranton native ran for more than 7-thousand yards and 100 touchdowns in his career. In baseball, he hit over .400 for his career at Lake City and stole 27 bases his senior season. He is slated to play either shortstop or in the outfield for the Gamecocks.

Carson was a Rawlings 1st team All American and a Under Armor All American, he is also a very talented RB, finishing his career at Lake City with 7,214 yards rushing and 100 touchdowns. Carson played in last season's Shrine Bowl with Clowney, Dukes, and the Dixons....

Can't wait for this kid. He will make an impact on one or the other. Glad to have him on both.

Move him to second and have him hang out with Wingo over the summer to learn how to play it.  Dual-sport, bay-bee lol, j/k but you gotta admit, it's an intriguing thought.

Let me get this straight. We're going to be "gifted" with a health care plan we are forced to purchase and will be fined for if we don't, written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn't understand it, passed by a Congress that hasn't read it but exempts itself from it, signed by a president who smokes, with funding administered by a treasury chief who didn't pay his taxes, to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese and financed by a country that's broke.

What could possibly go wrong?

You're hearing he's gonna pull a Whitson?  I'm surprised the Rays would let him slip away, but I would certainly be thrilled to hear it (both as a Gamecock AND Red Sox fan, hah)

Nothing I'd take to the bank. But I'm hearing that he isn't leaning completely one way or the other right now and that going to school is not out of the equation yet. Which for a first round draft pick is as good as you can ask for.

I don't see Tyler Guererri skipping the bonus money they are going to throw at him, although I do believe it would benefit him in the long run, beyond words, to do so.  I have heard that he is using the threat, if you will, of enrolling at SC in an effort to up his bonus money.  But there seems to be real question marks about whether or not he would even qualify to enroll at this point.  I'd love to see him on the mound for the Gamecocks next year and I do believe he's worth the full ride that they have offered.

I don't see Shon Carson as a middle infielder at Carolina either. He's a natural 3rd Baseman and probably even a better OF prospect.

I also don't see Carson playing much this year on the gridiron.  Probably just enough to sprain an ankle and get a med-red year or something like that.  Why waste a year of eligibility on the football field when we already have Latt and Miles back there toting the seed?

Carson is a special player, person, student athlete.  We were very fortunate to sign him.
