The main point in all of this is that he padded his stats against weak opponets. They showed his Completion % against 4 of the top defenses he faced (Florida, Bama, Ole Miss, LSU) and they were all under 50%. That is really the only thing you can say against him besides accuracy. It's just whether he does better against that competition or not

In Mallet's defense, I'd rather draft a guy like him than a guy like Russell, where you know Mallett has been forced to play with inferior supporting casts and had to be able to produce (at least somewhat) when his team wasn't the dominant talent on the field.  It's hard to fault the guy.  You put McElroy in Mallett's position and he does just as poorly (maybe worse).

I think Mallett is a premier QB, I just don't think Arky has the cast to help him like he would get if he were at any of the other marquee schools in the SEC.

However, that's partly  his own fault.  He left a big name school to go to Arky.

On college football live, Ed Cunningham tried to tear down the Heisman hype for Ryan Mallett. He tried to point out his lack of accuracy and footwork. Every "lowlight" he showed was either a dropped pass or a bad route by the receiver. He actually tried to compare him to Jamarcus Russell, and showed how much he struggled on the road against Alabama and Florida. Everyone struggled against Florida and Alabama. Of course though he tried to pump up Jake Locker's Heisman hype, a player that has done nothing. He is one of the biggest SEC haters on ESPN.

mallett doesnt have the best receivers in the nation to toss to...he has taken a mediocre arkansas team and made them contenders...i dont like his whin/bitchy attitude, but the kid can play....and better yet, hes a competitor.  j russell is and was lazy and strictly got by on his talent and golden arm....actually it was black, but you get my drift.  mallett is a punk bitch, but he is ferociously competitive and doing more with less at arkansas than russell had at lsu.

Let's not get carried away.  He's made them dangerous.  He's made them halfway competitive again.  But "contender" is a strong word.  Not sure what they can "contend" for.  They're not even a contender in the western division, let alone the conference or the nation.  They might spoil some folk's season or upset a team or two, but they're not exactly "contenders" yet.

Hey fat boy.  Who are you a fan of?  My guess would be Auburn.

English.  Words mean things.

Arkansas is still competiting to stay off the bottom in their division.  It's a fat chance that they finish in the top 3 of the West.

Mallett is good.  Arkansas is "improved" but they're nowhere near being a contender.

You mean FU.  It all makes sense now.

As far as Mallett not having a supporting cast I'm assuming you mean the defense and kicking game (a decent FG kicker and the refs couldn't have saved you last year).  The receiving corps is arguably the best in the SEC as a whole, the running backs are very good, we have the best TE in the league, and the OL is above average.

you may not think arkansas/ryan mallett have a "good chance" to win vs any opponent, but considering several close games to top 15 teams, most of which were on the road, using the following definition of "contender", i would in fact say that arkansas is a contender.

source:
contender - Definition of contender at YourDictionary.com

con·tend·er (kən tendər)
noun

  • one who contends
  • a person, team, etc. having or regarded as having a good chance to win a contest or competition:
many here would disagree with your assessment given this definition that arkansas is not a contender.

From Webster:

Contender:
: one that contends; especially : a competitor for a championship or high honor <a heavyweight title contender>

i.e. someone that can contend for the championship.

Any team can contend to win the game at hand....that kinda goes without saying don't you think?

Do you HONESTLY believe that Arkansas can "contend" to win ANY championship this year? If you want, I can blow sunshine up your ass and tell you that. Anything is possible. Likely? No.

The definition you're looking for is "spoiler." I completely admit...Arkansas has the potential to "spoil" someone's perfect season, or to "upset" a higher ranked team or two.

Why because I'm not telling you what you want to hear? I have friends from LSU, MSU, UM, FSU, UGA, and all over the SEC and very few of them can actually objectively evaluate their team's potential.

I've made so much money off Saint's fans over the years it's laughable.

It's not a sin to overvalue your team. But don't be angry when fans from other teams don't.

If you say Arkansas is a powerhouse and has all these top notch people you're claiming, then so be it. But I respectfully disagree (my opinion).

Arkansas will be slightly better than last year, but end up in the same spot when the conference standings come in. Middle of the SEC West. 3rd would be a victory for them. 4th would be par and 5th would be a disappointment.
