Ed Cunningham is retarded

On college football live, Ed Cunningham tried to tear down the Heisman hype for Ryan Mallett. He tried to point out his lack of accuracy and footwork. Every "lowlight" he showed was either a dropped pass or a bad route by the receiver. He actually tried to compare him to Jamarcus Russell, and showed how much he struggled on the road against Alabama and Florida. Everyone struggled against Florida and Alabama. Of course though he tried to pump up Jake Locker's Heisman hype, a player that has done nothing. He is one of the biggest SEC haters on ESPN.

He may have a point.....Mallett romped and bloated his stats against OOC teams with horrendous passing defenses........completed 75% of his passes against them. Against most of the SEC schedule he struggled to complete 50% of his passes....

I won't say that Mallet isn't a premier QB, but I will say that if he wants to win the Heisman, he's going to have to have his BEST games when it counts, not his worst.
They don't award the Heisman to a guy who has his best game against Troy and then chokes against quality defenses.
Granted, Mallett isn't surrounded by premium talent.
But facing AL, LSU and UF last year, he went a combined 41 for 101 (40.6%) and 3 TDs/2 Picks with a 203 yard/game average.
Granted, those are quality defenses (LSU is a little down, but still formidable) and that type of performance against quality teams is not what I would call "Heisman worthy."

It's true that Mallett padded his stats against weaker defenses, and typically didn't perform too well against good ones. I don't know if that takes him out of the Heisman discussion though.
I do know that Jake Locker is the real deal though. If anything, Locker is UNDER-hyped.

Troy Smith and Sam Bradford didnt exactly have great games against SEC defenses. We have a way of making good QB's look kinda bad.

Well, that's the drawback of living/playing in the SEC.
It's easier to swallow the argument that someone played well against conference opponents (even if that conference is the Big12 or the Big10) than if most of your highlights come from Troy and Missouri State and Eastern Michigan:rolleyes:
Besides, Bradford and Smith's poor performances came AFTER the Heisman voting.

Politicians should be required to wear uniforms like NASCAR. At least the TAXPAYERS would know who their corporate sponsors are !

Someone has their hater pants on today.
If you're referring to me, I don't "hate" Mallett.
I think he's a premier QB and I think he's obviously gonna be a high draftee.
I'm just a realist.
The real world aspects of the Heisman go like this.
Mallett doesn't play for a national title contender, so that's strike #1. (there's points for a team that's undefeated or expected to be in the national championship picture).
Mallett plays in the SEC, where the defenses are obviously a lot more stingy than the other conferences. As a runner, you get more points for that than you do as a passer. The national media and the Heisman voters too LOVE to play favorites and there's just as many homers who despise the SEC as there are that will admit we play the best defense.
Mallett doesn't have a premium supporting cast. Again, this helps in some respects (people will recognize that) but hurts more than it helps by way of his stats. (i.e. it's better to have a zillion yards with Randy Moss type WRs than to have to argue the other case of...well, if he had the same WR's as so and so).
And lastly, like I said, to have ANY chance of actually winning the Heisman, Mallett will have to play GREAT during his big games.
He'll be in the conversation the entire year, but unless you plays spectacular in the big, showcase games, he'll finish middle of the pack in the actuall voting.

I could really care less about any of the "Heisman Talk." I just want to see Mallett improve from last year and I think we will. Last season marked his first year as a starter, in the SEC no less, so there were bound to be some struggles. It didn't help that our receivers had the occasional cases of the drops last year (over 10 drops in both the Bama and Ole Miss games), and Mallett was asked to try and do too much because our run blocking was pretty bad last year and at times our running game disappeared.
I think this year you see our rushing stats go up, and Mallett's passing stats go down (but his efficiency will be much higher)

The main point in all of this is that he padded his stats against weak opponets. They showed his Completion % against 4 of the top defenses he faced (Florida, Bama, Ole Miss, LSU) and they were all under 50%. That is really the only thing you can say against him besides accuracy. It's just whether he does better against that competition or not

It's going to be so much fun watching reality settle in on the rebs this season. Do you all honestly think you'll stay on top against Mullen for long? I couldn't even type that with a straight face. Do you all honestly believe that you'll have another number one recruit pick you again because of family obligations? lmao.

That he won't ever win you more than nine games in a single season. Put it your sig. In three years, when he's lost to State twice and he's standing next to Houston Nutt in the unemployment line, we'll be laughing.
