CLEMSON — The phone call interrupted his Sunday breakfast at the Isle of Palms and caught Clemson head basketball coach Oliver Purnell completely by surprise.

The caller was rising junior guard Terrence Oglesby, the Tigers top returning perimeter shooter, who wanted to inform Purnell that he was leaving school to pursue a professional basketball career in Europe.

“I don’t agree with the decision,” Purnell said Wednesday. “Then again, I haven’t had a chance to think about it a whole lot in terms of all the pros and cons.”

Purnell sounded surprised that he wasn’t consulted in some capacity by Oglesby and also didn’t believe that the player’s decision had anything to do with some late-season buzz that his team had chemistry issues.

The coaches are not allowed to be around the team once the semester concludes, so Purnell wasn’t sure if anything negative had arisen between Oglesby and his teammates.

“I’m not a mind-reader, but (Oglesby) didn’t mention any of that,” Purnell said.

Oglesby, a 6-foot-2, 190-pounder from Cleveland, Tenn., was a regular starter last season and finishes his Clemson career with 777 points in 66 games. He already ranks among the school’s all-time top 10 in 3-pointers made, 3-pointers per game and 3-point accuracy.

He ranked third on the team last year with 13.2 points per game and ranked second in the ACC in 3-pointers made and 3-point accuracy, while his 92 made were fourth most in a season at Clemson.

On the negative side, Oglesby wasn’t one of the team’s best defenders and his shot selection was suspect at best.

“Over the past several years, I have had the opportunity to play internationally, and as a result I have been given the opportunity to play professionally in Europe,” Oglesby said. “After much thought and consideration, I have opted to take my basketball career a step further and pursue a professional career.”
