Last night LSU beat McNeese State 6-3, thanks to a Ryan Schimpf three-run homer which capped off a four-run six inning. Schimpf also had an RBI single in the game, making him by far the most productive of LSU's hitters on a night when the Tigers collected a grand total of six hits.

This followed a Tuesday night win over Northwestern State where LSU had to get a clutch hit from Micah Gibbs in the ninth inning to pull out a 2-1 win.

The fact is, LSU's offense has completely collapsed in the last week. This past weekend, it was somewhat excusable given that Kentucky brought out some premier arms who will give a lot of teams trouble. But when Northwestern State and McNeese make guys like Leon Landry, Blake Dean and D.J. LeMahieu look like goofballs something ain't right.

LSU head coach Paul Mainieri admitted he's getting concerned about his team's sluggishness at the plate. Mainieri thinks his guys are too passive and they're taking too many strikes. I think that's part of it, and I also think they're swinging for the fences too often when they do go after a pitch. This is leading to a ridiculous number of strikeouts and it's also leading to popups by the bushel.

Friday this team is going to Columbia to take on South Carolina in a three-game set. The Gamecocks aren't pitching all that well, as they've got a 4.47 team ERA. But they hit the ball a lot better than the Northwestern States and McNeeses do, so it will be a bad weekend for LSU if the Tigers don't snap out of this offensive malaise they're infected with right now.

Can't wait for the series this weekend.  I'm going to try and be at every game.  I'm ready for some good ole SEC baseball!

It should be a very good series.  Let's hope the weather is good and that both teams are at the top of their game.
