Yeah, there's no doubt last year was a good year for SEC Quarterbacks and this year just isn't the same.

The season hasn't even started yet.  For all we know Casey Dick could flourish with Petrino while Kodi Burns learns how to lead Auburn to some big wins.  Jon Crompton could also be a  stud.  Just because there is no preseason hype on these guys and they are unproven doesn't mean we aren't going to have a good season for SEC quarterbacks.  Wait til the end of the season to evaluate them and compare them to last years.

I personally thought some of the quarterbacks from last year were over hyped and overrated.

My list:
1. Tim Tebow
2. Matt Stafford
3. Jon Crompton
4. JPW
5. Casey Dick

Surely by the time the year is out we will have two quarterbacks worthy of knocking Casey Dick and John Parker Wilson off of this list. They have no business there.

IMO neither does Crompton. I think by the end of the year he will be top 3 and right up there with Stafford. (Remember, this guy was the #2 pro-style QB in the nation behind Mark Sanchez when he was being recruited) But until he get's a few wins under his belt I wouldn't have him on any top QB list.

While I do think JPW isn't a world-beater, I think that most people are short-changing him. He led us to beat Ark at the last minute, he led a last minute drive to tie Georgia, and he picked apart the Tennessee secondary last year. I think the dropoff last year towards the end is mostly due to the lack of run support, inconsistency with the OL (bookgate), and ineffective playcalling. Calling for long pass plays when the defense is blitzing like crazy isn't wise, yet there was more than a few occasions that this was called. One thing that he has to establish early is rhythm, and he gets rattled easily. I think with McElwain calling the plays he will thrive, maybe not ALL-SEC, but he's gonna improve.

Arkansas sucked.

he does that occasionally.

and he picked apart the Tennessee secondary last year.
No argument there. But we were very inexperienced in the secondary last year too. Other than UF, we were the youngest.

We will see. I doubt it. But we will just have to wait and see.

BTW you guys were singing Major Applewhite's praises last year at this time and I told everyone who would listen how bad he was going to be.
McElwain is a complete unknown and you have no way of predicting how good he will be at calling plays. That said, a blind monkey could probably do a better job than Applewhite. Just don't get your hopes up. McElwain is there because Nick could not find anyone better. If he excels, I'll be shocked.

This is true. we were sold on Applewhite's playcalling abilities but everyone could see he was struggling in the season. This was Applewhite's 2nd OC position and it showed. McElwain improved Fresno St's offense from 338.2 ypg to 419.5 ypg. Also, the more exciting stat that we Alabama fans like to see is his work on QB play. His QB went from 89th passer efficiency rating to 23rd. Maybe I'm just an eternal optimist, but I'm thinking JPW will improve.

What about Wesley Carroll at MSU?  You've got Crompton on the list who hasn't proved anything yet, Casey Dick who without McFadden and Jones will be turned into minced meat by defenses this year when they don't have to stack 9 men in the box, and John Parker Wilson who may be the greatest choke artist ever at Alabama.  I don't really see the logic for these picks.

My list would look like this:

1.  Tebow, He is the Heisman and deserving of it.
2.  Stafford, very solid and smart QB.
3.  Kodi Burns,  Hasn't proved much yet but has more potential than any of the other rookie QB's, and you know he's going to electrify some people with just his speed and athletic ability.
4.  Wesley Carroll,  Set the SEC record and was one attempt away from setting the NCAA record of pass attempts without an interception by a Freshman.  Show some good signs of being a leader last year despite being thrown into action as the starter the third game of the year.
5.  Whoever Kentucky's QB is,   they always have a stud QB and you know that he'll get more than enough attempts to make an impact on the stat sheets.

First off, I don't have ANYONE on that list, that was a list given from the radio show.

Secondly, I don't see how you argue that Crompton is on the list when he hasn't proved anything, then you turn around and put Kodi Burns at #3, and he hasn't proved a damn thing either.

Wesley Carrol, I might give ya... but I think everyone expects MSU to be a largely rushing team, so the QB position isn't as highlighted.

For my own personal list, I would have

1. Tebow
2. Stafford
3. Wilson (say what you want, but he is a Senior who I expect will play better than most of his junior counterparts in the conference)
4. Pulley (UK) (guy is a big mobile Senior QB who can hurt you with the long ball. I wouldn't be surprised to see a DJ Shockely-esque season out of this guy)
5. Dick/Crompton

Those are good stats. I do (playing devil's advocate here) remember similar stats thrown out there to support Applewhite though. Stats are just that, stats. You can always quote the ones that help an argument and omit the ones that don't. Results are all that matter and for that, we are just going to have to wait for football time.

No way does Mississippi State QB make the list.  The spring game ended in a 0-0 tie in which both QBs had about a total 25 yards.  Miss St is going to have by far the worst offense in the SEC.  They will just have to hope that the Defense pulls them through games.

it was a spring game.. and i believe he only attempted like 4 passes the entire game... please dont base ur beliefs on a QB on a spring game.. the guy showed great leadership and was good mantaining the game during his freshman yr.. while showing that he can hurt u with his arm.. take the arky game.. (which we lost b/c dick also hurt us with his arm).. just b/c of the unproven qb's in the SEC.. i'd say wesley had to be on that list.. i think he will be no more than a avg qb.. maybe a lil above avg.. but nothing like tebow or any of them.. tebow and stafford are the only true qb's in this league.. JPW?? dont even get me started on the chokeartist..

Yeah, I don't know much about Miss St other than what I read in my preseason magazine.  They seem to think that Miss St will have the worst offense known to man this season, so that's all I have to go by.

Spring games are usually pretty telling. I'm on your side. I really want MSU to be good this year. I want them to continue to improve from last year, but I, probably like you again if you're honest with yourself, am used to MSU letting me down. Until it's proven that you have a  top 5 QB there is no reason to put one on the list. Even going by what he did last year there is no way he is top 5. MSUBULLY is just an uber-homer. We forget that every team has those, because you rarely see it out of MSU and Vandy.

I argued with a guy that was an Ole Miss fan midseason last year when I put Seth Adams near last in the SEC in ranking QBs and told him that the coaches were just biding their time, waiting for Snead and praying that they still had jobs at the end of the year. He acted like I was insane. Spot on though. Spot on.

carroll only attempted like 4 or 6 passes but last year he was coming off shoulder surgery and was a true freshman.....i dont think he'll light up the stat sheet by any means but i do think he will make good decisions and manage the game very well.....he did prove last year though that he is a tough smart kid so he can only get better....he dd make a couple throws though last year that we havent seen since fant or madkin though, ones that henig could never make accuracy wise......but by the end of the season i think tebow, stafford, burns(because he can run), crompton, and dick(b/c of the system).....just my thoughts....
