Baseball Takes Series Opener At Georgia, 7-5
Friday March 30, 2007
Athens, GA
Senior Matt LaPorta (Port Charlotte, Fla.) bashed two more home runs as Florida (16-13/5-2 SEC) overcame a 4-1 deficit with a six-run sixth to capture its series opener over Georgia (10-15/3-4 SEC), 7-5, on Friday night in front of 2,929 fans at Foley Field. LaPorta (2-for-4, three RBI) registered his sixth career multi-homer outing to lift the Gators to their season-best fifth win in a row and the slugger now leads the SEC with 11 dingers. After surrendering three runs in the first, junior Bryan Augenstein (Sebastian, Fla.) (3-3) rebounded to work 7.1 innings for his first league win since May 12 of last season at Alabama. The victory marked the first time since 2002 that Florida had emerged victorious in game one of a series with the Bulldogs.

Congrats to Gators on a nice win. I'm sure you guys are hoping the "w's" keep coming in the days ahead in all sports (specifically "basketball"). What a come back for Augenstein after struggling early on and breaking the Bulldog first game jinks. Should be a good game tomorrow.

Thanks. I'm hoping we rack up a few SEC wins before we have to play the conference juggernauts like SC and Vandy. When we were talking baseball before the season started, I was getting the impression that most of our players were rejects from the Special Olympics. What's promising is that we're winning a lot of road games (3-game sweep at Auburn and 1st at UGA). Game 2 is at 1:00 with our freshman lefty, Tony Davis starting. He's looked good so far, at 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA. The game is televised on CSS, but I'll only get to catch a few innings, because I'm going to the Gator Pep Rally for the Final Four at the Georgia Congress Center at 3:00.

We've made a nice little comeback. Hopefully, whatever has been the problem is behind us.....
