Budding rivalry: Texas A&M plans Midnight Yell practice at South Carolina State House

Brad Crawford

This ought to go over well with the Gamecocks.

Gig ‘Em!

On the eve of South Carolina’s SEC Network season opener against Texas A&M on Aug. 28, the Aggies are planning their Midnight Yell practice on the steps of the South Carolina State House, an odd venue for what amounts to a late-night tailgate in Columbia.

Hosted by the South Carolina A&M Club and The Association of Former Students, a large group of Aggies will descend on the historic building along Gervais Street that houses the South Carolina General Assembly and the offices of the Governor and Lieutenant Governor late Wednesday and show off their primal scream expertise.

According to Texas A&M tradition, Yell Practice began in 1931. It’s held on Friday nights before Saturday home games at Kyle Field and at a specified location on the road. Midnight Yell has since become an essential part of game week for students and cadets.

The power of the 12th Man won’t be as strong at Williams-Brice Stadium where the Gamecocks have won a nation-leading 18 straight.
The SEC’s new permanent cross-division rivalry just got a bit more juicier.

This is a little disrespectful dont you think?

My only issue is with the location. They have chosen a location that is the government center of our State and the symbol of our State's sovereignty. There is no reason for them to do it there. It's low class. This is "bush-league" crap.

The SEC has been honorable to each of it's opponents. This is what adding ATM added?? Ugh.

No I won't. This is blatant disrespect to the citizens of South Carolina. This is OUR state house. Not yours. I don't have a problem with the tradition, the location of said tradition is another story.

You guys wanna yell, go to the Colonial Center or something like that. Our State House is not the place for that crap.

I don't really care where they do it, but I didn't know people were allowed on the grounds at all hours of the day or night.

There is already a very big push from a lot of different Gamecock group to show up and drown them out.  It should be interesting.

Yep. Well, they're planning on it.

This is utterly low class and disrespectful to the citizens of South Carolina. My opinion of ATM has now gone down to a new low....

I would also like to warn them that the City of Columbia has several noise ordinances in place....

Sec. 8-61. Unreasonably loud, disturbing or unnecessary noise.Posted Image

It shall be unlawful for any person to create, assist in creating, permit, continue or permit the continuance of any unreasonably loud, disturbing or unnecessary noise in the city.

Sec. 8-68. Crying out or playing bells, drum or other instrument to attract attention.Posted Image

It shall be unlawful for any person to make any noise upon a public street or in such proximity thereto as to be distinctly and loudly audible upon such street by any kind of crying, calling or shouting, or by means of any whistle, rattle, bell, gong, clapper, horn, hammer, drum, musical instrument or other device, for the purpose of attracting attention or of inviting patronage of any persons to any business whatever.

This has "Disturbing the peace" or "Inciting a riot" written all over it.....

Nobody enforces a cow bell noise so why enforce this? Both teams wear the same color so who knows the difference?

It could turn into a Westboro Baptist style showdown.  My advice to SC fans is to make signs that say "God Hates Ags"
