Not really Malaysian airlines fault on this one.  All appearances are the aircraft was shot down.  Possibly by a BUK missile...

Looking at it you're right, the airspace is closed and has been since 8 July.  Although it seems like it's been mostly ignored.

Word coming out it was the rebels using Russkie supplied gear.  Leader taking credit for it...

Not with the right SAM.  Most mediam to large russian SAMs can hit targets in excess of 80k feet, a consequence of the existence of the US and SR-71....
