I probably should have put this in trash talk but it should be here until folks get pissy.

The opening game between ark and au could set the tone for the toughest sec west season on record. I know most all penciled a win on ark but that one game could make folks pull out an eraser.

The conference pride stuff makes me want to puke.

Conference divisional pride stuff makes me want to drop kick a puppy.

He's got a point though. Alabama, Auburn, and LSU can all compete for a National Championship. The Mississippi schools will be good this year too. If Arkansas can join A&M as being respectable, the West could be the toughest ever.

That is something I agree with you about. I hate conference pride. Take pride in your team. That is all that really matters anyway. I have never been into the conference thing. Getting all wrapped up in DIVISIONAL pride is just toooo much for me!

Auburn's going to beat that ass, so it won't be compelling after the first quarter, but it is at least a legitimate opener for us.

I am very glad I have never made a statement like that in my life.  If you want respect, HAVE some respect.

I dont think its a lack of respect. Most people would agree that Auburn will torch them.

You do realize that the better each SEC team does, the better we all look...right??

Yeah, but you shouldn't have to depend on somebody else to make you look good, ya know?

If that were the case then Bama would be viewed just like Oregon, Texas, or Ohio State.  Great team in an average conference that only has to play two or three real games a year.

The fact that Bama plays in the SEC makes their championships even more impressive.  Heck, Bama likely wouldn't have one maybe two of their lastest championships if it wasn't for the reputation of the SEC.

LSU-Alabama natty wouldn't have happened if not for the conference strength.

Yes, he does have a point.

I'm not taking away from that, just asking "why?".
Conference pride has served its purpose. Conference divisional pride serves no purpose at all except for lower tier teams to claim they are better than other lower tier teams.

More to the point, schools like F$U, USC, Ohio State, etc don't need their conferences to be extremely brutal.
They just need the big name coaches and recruits, and they will get the benefit of the doubt.
See: Bama, Auburn, LSU, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee

Something about diminishing returns after the conference becomes "too good".
