A fringe benefit of the playoff system is the Peach Bowl getting its name back.

I remember sitting in the Atlanta airport and reading that they were going to wipe out all that bowl tradition by completely removing the "Peach" part; and I got bent out of shape.

Everybody I know hated it; hard to believe it's lasted this long as just the Chicken-Neck Bowl.

Bowl complies with new playoff

Updated: April 18, 2014, 1:36 PM ETBy Brett McMurphy | ESPN.com

In an effort to comply with the new College Football Playoff, the Atlanta-based bowl game has gone back to its roots and will now be known as the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, sources told ESPN.com on Friday.

The decision to include Peach in the name for the first time since 2006 came in part because conference commissioners determined last April that any games involved in the College Football Playoff could not go solely by a corporate name.

Last year, CFP executive director Bill Hancock told ESPN.com that conference commissioners wanted the playoff bowl names "to be parallel." Sources said Chick-fil-A Bowl officials had been told multiple times in the past year that they likely would have to change the name.

The Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, which will continue to be played on New Year's Eve, is one of the six bowls that will rotate as hosts of the new College Football Playoff semifinals. It will host the semifinals in 2016, '19, '22 and '25.

The other College Football Playoff bowls are the Rose, Sugar, Orange, Fiesta and Cotton.

The Peach Bowl debuted in 1968 and was known by that name until 1998, when it became the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. However, Peach was removed from the title in 2006 and it stayed that way for the past eight seasons.

Good news. Chick-Fil-A is overrated. It should be the Zaxby's Bowl.

That's great! Now can we get the Gator Bowl back too?

That one never left; it's always been the Gator Bowl, just with the Tax Slayer sponsor name included.

I agree; but they're not doing that with the Peach Bowl, either.

They're just putting the Peach part back in to make it the Chik-fil-A Peach Bowl, after leaving the Peach out the last 8 years.

It's a compromise, but it's better than not having the Peach identifier at all... I bet lots of the younger generations of fans and those to come would never even know the Chik is really the Peach had they not changed it back.

I hate sponsor names... It rather spoils the feeling of old tradition.

I really don't care for the Corporate logo's on the bowls. I agree it's good to notate the origins as a compromise; money, money, money!

Money always seems to be the key for everything that goes on in sports. (or the world!)

We've got 40 bowl games now; without corporate sponsors most of them don't survive since actual ticket and concession sales are so low for most of them.

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing a bunch of them die off; but I also recognize it's special for the players to get a post-season game like that and important for programs to get additional practice and playing time going into the off-season.

Forty bowl games.  That about two dozen too many.  Not everybody and their brother should go to a bowl game where they have to be careful with the camera angles to prevent the empty seats that encompass 75% of stadium from being seen on national TV.

Let the top 16 or so have a legit full playoff, and leave a few of the big time bowls (rose bowl, orange bowl, etc.) for the best of the rest.

So when the falcons leave Atlanta.... will the peach bowl be the only game at ga dome? Or does ga tech move in?
