Well, I would use a more favorable comparison, but the typical government-free paradise imagined by Libertarians doesn't exist outside SF novels

You're mistaking Libertarians with Anarchists. I know you aren't that uninformed.

I agree, no govt. regulation is the best policy! Ask the people of the late 19th/ early 20th century. They never got :lanekiffin:ed over!!!

To say the market has screwed people as bad as govt, well, last I checked there hasn't been a single instance of the marketplace engaging in mass murder, something that govts engage in with disturbing regularity.

And as far as Somalia goes, would you believe the standard of living in nearly anarchic Somalia has risen faster than the rest of the sub - Sahara African nations and their fancy smancy governments. Put another way anarchy can in fact be better than poor governments.

The biggest place we need government oversight is where it pertains to general safety, like the FDA

But to let the government attempt to price fix and control the market by telling producers what and how much of a certain product they can turn out  is a mistake. Everyone wants to point out that FDR did that in the thirties. Yes, he did, and it didn't end the depression. Sorry, it just didn't. Unbridled Capitalism ended the depression. When rich people make money, they want to make more of it, expanding operations, giving jobs to people in the process.

The best way to ensure that the economy stays healthy is, in fact, to foster a sense of security for big investors to feel safe in. The rich get richer, yes, but so does everyone else.
