actions speak louder than words...

WE are beginning to witness a paradox at the heart of capitalism, one that has propelled it to greatness but is now threatening its future: The inherent dynamism of competitive markets is bringing costs so far down that many goods and services are becoming nearly free, abundant, and no longer subject to market forces. While economists have always welcomed a reduction in marginal cost, they never anticipated the possibility of a technological revolution that might bring those costs to near zero.

The first inkling of the paradox came in 1999 when Napster, the music service, developed a network enabling millions of people to share music without paying the producers and artists, wreaking havoc on the music industry. Similar phenomena went on to severely disrupt the newspaper and book publishing industries. Consumers began sharing their own information and entertainment, via videos, audio and text, nearly free, bypassing the traditional markets altogether.

P2P sharing and sites like thepiratebay and whanot are not hindering the recording, TV and film industries at all but are actually helping them according to several new studies. the market should learn and adapt as it always does, not only regarding internet "piracy" but a more modern approach to doing business. Big budget newspapers aren't really all that necessary anymore. Just like horseshoes weren't after the expanded availability of the automobile.

Learn, adapt, modernize, grow.

Always thought computers and the internet might have that effect; don't know why "economists" couldn't foresee it... hell, we talked about it in computer science way back in the mid-90's.

We asked even then what was preventing someone from copying books and e-mailing them to others or making them available online for anyone to copy.

Luddites...

Progress leads to efficiency and lowers costs for everybody, including the poor. Take modern farming. Sure we don't need 40 people to farm 1000 acres but most of them found other jobs and now we don't have to spend 60% of our income on food.

An efficient economy that lowers costs for everybody enables people to make a living providing services that wouldn't be afforded otherwise (cosmetology for example).

BUT, copyright laws exist to protect property and theft is still theft.

Sure, there are a number of issues that complicate things. Government subsidies, crop insurance fraud, land value, economies of scale. Buy its cyclical and gone are the days of high food prices so long as techniques around the world trend towards maximizing yield per acre.

it didn't bring costs close to zero....it just made it easier for people to steal. The record labels still had to promote the album, pay the bands and producers, and pay all the tons of other fees. The only thing it got rid of was the cost of cds and burning them...but that was a very negligible expense anyway.

I'm not anti-capitalist, but I think it should be checked. Just lol at anyone who worships the free market like it will always take care of itself , or that most big companies actually give a sh!t about hurting people.
