UK falls to VMI 10-9 in a walk-off in the 9th.  Starting pitching wasn't stellar as Kyle Cody was Cody was pulled during the 4th after giving up 3 but we gave up 6 runs in the 8th/9th innings.  The bullpen hasn't had a good start this year despite several years of success previously.

My takeaways from week 1:

1. Arkansas will be a much better offensive team that in year's past. We're deeper offensively than we've been in several years, and getting back to being more aggressive on the base paths. it was hard for our hitters to get in a rhythm this weekend with all the walks and HBP. I believe we had 12 hit batsmen over the weekend. Much more disciplined at the plate though.

2. Defense was solid for the most part. Some silly errors that can usually be chalked up to new guys and the first real games of the year. Most came from subs or guys that are battling for a starting spot.

3. Pitching was solid. Beeks made his case to be a weekend starter, as he was dominant on Friday. Oliver was good on Saturday, but either he or Beeks will be in the pen as the closer and right now I think its Chris Oliver. other two starters will probably end up being Colin Poche and Trey Killian.

We finally have the A+ leadoff guy that we've been lacking since Craig Gentry graduated. Andrew Benitendi is a true freshman CF and is going to be a great player in the SEC. Didn't have a hit this weekend but worked the count and drew several walks and HBPs. Was 2nd in On Base Percentage this weekend and first in runs scored. Great on the basepaths and very good in center field.

Going to be a fun team to watch. Lots of new faces.

We took 2 of 3 from Maryland. OSullivan had a ton a great things to say about them, so I think that we just played a pretty solid team this weekend. However, I am a little worried about our starting pitching. Poyner was dominant Friday, but Morales and Whitson both struggled on Sat/Sun

I think Whitson can get it together.
And based on last night, we have more options we can rotate into weekend roles instead of midweek.
Logan Shore killed it.

too early to be really worried about starting pitching. Some of these guys are playing their first collegiate baseball games.

We may not know what our exact pitching situation is going to be until conference play starts. I have to imagine it'll be some combination of Poche, Killian and Beeks, and Oliver has the gas to possibly be the best closer in the SEC.

We won't have a clue either for a couple more weeks.
I feel good about our bats compared to last season though.
We've scored a lot more than I anticipated.

This will be our best all around hitting team we've fielded in several years. If we had these bats with last year's pitching staff I think we'd have run deep to Omaha. this year, the bullpen will be the question mark.

We already have like 1/3 of the home runs we had last year in three games. I mean damn, that's a pretty big improvement.

UK lost to USC Upstate on Monday in another close game.  Puts us at 2-2 for the season despite having a very good win over Virginia.  Sounds like another rough year for us after having some hope after a decent start.  Can't wait until Henderson is out of Lexington but unfortunately that won't happen anytime soon...
