Rand Paul is trying to bridge that gap. He's soft on drugs, gays, medicare/ss reform, and abortion. All of those topics are contentious issues between libertarians and the tea party. He emphasizes the things that both groups are mostly in agreement about. He has no shot at winning the GOP establishment and moderates.
