In the first quarter Tre Mason had 8 carries and 1 catch. Auburn scored 7 points.

In the second quarter Tre Mason had 10 carries. Auburn scored 14 points.

In the third quarter Tre Mason had 3 carries. Auburn scored 0 points.

In the fourth quarter Tre Mason had 13 carries. Auburn scored 10 points.

Now for the TL;DR version:
Anybody see a trend there? I was absolutely baffled by our play calls in the third quarter. I mostly lost my voice screaming about it. When you're up 21-10 what do you typically do? Most people would say run the ball, control the clock, keep the ball out of the Heisman winner's hands, and win the game. But no, here's what we decided to do:

First drive of the 3rd: 1st and 10 at AUB 37 Tre Mason rush for 3 yards to the Aub 40. 10 21 2nd and 7 at AUB 40 Nick Marshall pass complete to Sammie Coates for 22 yards to the FlaSt 38 for a 1ST down. 1st and 10 at FSU 38 Nick Marshall pass complete to Quan Bray for 2 yards to the FlaSt 36. 2nd and 8 at FSU 36 Nick Marshall pass incomplete to Sammie Coates. 3rd and 8 at FSU 36 AUBURN penalty 10 yard Holding on Greg Robinson accepted, no play. 3rd and 18 at FSU 46 Nick Marshall pass incomplete to Sammie Coates. 4th and 18 at FSU 46 Steven Clark punt for 37 yards, fair catch by Kenny Shaw at the FlaSt 9.

Second drive of the 3rd: 1st and 10 at AUB 28 Tre Mason rush for 4 yards to the Aub 32. 13 21 2nd and 6 at AUB 32 Cameron Artis-Payne rush for 1 yard to the Aub 33. 3rd and 5 at AUB 33 Nick Marshall pass incomplete to Corey Grant. 4th and 5 at AUB 33 Steven Clark punt for 48 yards, fair catch by Kenny Shaw at the FlaSt 19.

Third drive of the 3rd: 1st and 10 at AUB 43 Nick Marshall rush for 13 yards to the FlaSt 44 for a 1ST down. 13 21 1st and 10 at FSU 44 Tre Mason rush for a loss of 2 yards to the FlaSt 46. 2nd and 12 at FSU 46 Nick Marshall pass complete to Quan Bray for 2 yards to the FlaSt 44. 3rd and 10 at FSU 44 Nick Marshall pass incomplete to Melvin Ray, broken up by Terrence Brooks. 4th and 10 at FSU 44 Steven Clark punt for 40 yards, downed at the FlaSt 4.

...Seriously? Mason gained 3 and 4 yards on the first two drives and then didn't see the ball again. Of course it didn't help that they called a pussy ass holding call on Robinson, which was less of a hold than about seven or eight non-calls on FSU. I LIKED the non-calls on FSU's holds until they called a BS one on us. I'd prefer letting teams play, but if they call that shit on us they should've been calling it on FSU all game long.

So then we get to the 4th quarter... The game's way tighter now, so of course we're going to run the ball and waste clock, right?
Well....

First drive of the 4th quarter: 1st and 10 at AUB 26 Tre Mason rush for 7 yards to the Aub 33. 13 21 2nd and 3 at AUB 33 Tre Mason rush for 7 yards to the Aub 40 for a 1ST down. 1st and 10 at AUB 40 Ricardo Louis rush for a loss of 6 yards to the Aub 34. 2nd and 16 at AUB 34 Nick Marshall pass intercepted by P.J. Williams at the FlaSt 40, returned for 4 yards to the FlaSt 44, fumbled, forced by Trovon Reed, recovered by FlaSt Lamarcus Joyner at the FlaSt 44

Oh hey look! We gave it to Mason and he got 14 yards on two carries!!! Oh, then we ran a trick play with Louis, set ourselves up in a must-pass situation, Marshall forced it, and got picked off.

Second drive of the 4th quarter: 1st and 10 at AUB 25 Nick Marshall rush for 2 yards to the Aub 27. 20 21 2nd and 8 at AUB 27 Nick Marshall pass complete to Ricardo Louis for 26 yards to the FlaSt 47 for a 1ST down. 1st and 10 at FSU 47 Tre Mason rush for 2 yards to the FlaSt 45. 2nd and 8 at FSU 45 Tre Mason rush for 11 yards to the FlaSt 34 for a 1ST down. 1st and 10 at FSU 34 Tre Mason rush for 3 yards to the FlaSt 31. 2nd and 7 at FSU 31 Nick Marshall rush for 7 yards to the FlaSt 24 for a 1ST down. 1st and 10 at FSU 24 Tre Mason rush for 4 yards to the FlaSt 20. 2nd and 6 at FSU 20 Tre Mason rush for 4 yards to the FlaSt 16. 3rd and 2 at FSU 16 Tre Mason rush for 4 yards to the FlaSt 12 for a 1ST down. 1st and 10 at FSU 12 Tre Mason rush for 2 yards to the FlaSt 10. 2nd and 8 at FSU 10 Nick Marshall rush for 4 yards to the FlaSt 6. 3rd and 4 at FSU 6 Nick Marshall pass incomplete to Sammie Coates. 4th and 4 at FSU 6 Cody Parkey 22 yard field goal GOOD.

We FINALLY got some sense and gave Mason the ball. Well, that is until we got to the 10 yard line, because why keep running the ball with Mason, which got us to the 10 to begin with, when we could put things in Marshall's hands instead? This should have been a TOUCH DOWN drive, which would have made the difference. Of course we all know that next drive Mason got tired of this shit and just ran in for a 37 yard TD. He probably would have scored slower than that if we hadn't pissed him off, but you can't blame him for knocking guys down and scoring, given the circumstances.

There's no excuse for us losing this game. We lost because we chose the wrong guys to give the ball to. We lost because those wrong guys could not execute. But it didn't have to be that way at all.

I just hope Gus learned his lesson, and I hope Tre Mason Posted Imageing stays another year. Oh, and Posted Image Nick Marshall. As great as a runner as he's been all year, he was horrible at running and decision-making tonight and of course he missed a wide open TD pass to start the game, which also would've been the difference.

We won't have to stack the box, our athletes are better. Read the first sentence, Auburn won't have over 175. Bet anything you want, it's not gonna happen. That's the one thing Bama can do without a doubt 100% mark it down, and have been for years.

If you're going to bet, it will be longer than signing day. This is a rivalry that lasts 365 days, you would have to at least keep it until next football season or this isn't even worth mentioning. Besides, Bama could be winning late in the game and the scrubs get the 200.
Either way, it won't be happening to Bama's defense.

Mason was too pissed off at the universe to stop at that point. Ray Lewis and Brian Urlacher would have been scraped off the ground if they'd been standing at the goal line waiting for Mason.

You don't lay down before the goal line when you're trailing by 3 pts with barely over a minute to play.

It was 27-24. A FG would've tied the game, not given them the lead.

Auburn should have shoved Tre Mason down FSU throat.

They did 75% of the time.

It wasn't enough.

You can't think that way as a player. Down by 3, NC game, a minute left, you have nothing but the endzone in front of you and you think to yourself "Gee, I better fall down here so we can run off another 30-40 seconds so that they don't have time to score"...no way.
