USC has hired Washington's Steve Sarkisian as its new football coach, multiple sources told ESPN.

Sarkisian took over Washington in 2009 and led the Huskies to a 34–29 record and 24-21 in the Pac-12 over five seasons. Washington is 8-4 this season and finished third in the Pac-12 North with a 5-4 conference record. Washington did not play USC this season.

Sarkisian interviewed with USC over the weekend, a source told ESPN.

USC has made it known to interim coach Ed Orgeron that they value his contribution to the program and would like him to stay in some capacity.

USC athletic director Pat Haden fired Lane Kiffin earlier this season.

ESPN's Joe Schad contributed to this report.

This is a B- hire.  Would UF, Bama, UGA, or even South Carolina hire a guy with a 34–29 record and 24-21 in the Pac-12 over five seasons.?

Horrible hire. I don't know why Haden was so eager to hire someone immediately. They struck out on this one, he'll never win a NC under him imo.

I just don't get it.  You have deep deep pockets and the best you can do is hire a guy that can't win in your conference.  That would be like Bama hiring Dan Mullen.

Ed Orgeron to Washington

USC beat Washington 24-14 last year and 40-17 in 2011. Kiffin > Sarkisian

To be fair, Washington was a special kind of bad when he took over there. They were coming off 9-28 three season stretch and they were 0-12 the year before he took over. What he's done there is pretty impressive, considering what he started with.
