According to Joe Schad of ESPN, Athletic Director Pat Haden is close to hiring the USC Trojans’ new head coach. The top two candidates are currently Boise State’s Chris Peterson and Vanderbilt’s James Franklin. A decision could be made as early as this week.

UPDATE at 11:ET: Chris Peterson has removed his name from consideration.

Isn't Vandy losing like 99% of their starters, too? Great decision by both parties. Going 9-3 & 8-4 in consecutive years at Vandy is next to impossible, regardless of how strong/weak the East is.

As a Mizzou fan, even I am disappointed about this news for you Vandy fans.

Tough one to swallow.

Who has the first shift watching Hogan?  This will not end well.
"Whenever I see those crimson jerseys and crimson helmets, I feel humbled to have played football for Alabama. Other players in the NFL talk to me about their schools and their traditions. I just smile knowing the immense love Alabama fans have for our school and its football program. I'm proud to be a part of that Crimson Tide heritage."

@Hoganknows knows that James Franklin loves Nashville and would never leave Tennessee for sunny California.

As much as I want to pile on, hasn't USC also interviewed UQ coach Steve Sarkisian? I don't think it's a foregone conclusion that Franklin will be at USC, but it's still probable.

I would go for Sarkisian in a New York minute if I were USC.
Duke's David Cutcliffe is another good one that might be considered.

A lot of schools will probably start going after Cutcliffe now. And I wouldn't blame them.
