I think people are a little surprised/confused because this team is better than last year's, but we aren't murdering everyone like we did most of last season.
We beat MSU in The Hump by more than 30 points last season.
Yeah, but when peronnel changes, so do the matchups, as well as the style of play.
That's always been one of BD's strongest talents; identifying what his personnel can do, and designing the offense and defense around it.
Last year we had little post presence and lots of 3-point shooters, so lots of running and gunning, but not very efficient running a half-court offense.
The ball almost never went down low to Young; so infrequently in fact, that Gator fans wondered aloud whether he'd even bother to come back for this year.
But now we have some length that can play the post, with Prather, who's only 6'6" but can leap out of the arena, attacking the rim instead of trying to be a shooter.
And there's DFS, who, at 6'8" can play the post and attack the rim, but can also step out to the 3-point line and drill shots... Murphy was similarly sized, but was a sharpshooter who was useless under the basket.
That being the case, we now play a half-court offense far more than we have since Noah and Horford camped out under the basket.
Still, we're #22 in the country in scoring margin, at 13 ppg.
Last year's Elite 8 team finished #2 at 17 ppg; the previous year's Elite 8 team finished #15 at 11 ppg; and the Elite 8 team the year before that finished #29 at 9 ppg.
So we're where we need to be, and we have a much more balanced and complete team than any of those previous Elite 8 teams... it's not do-or-die by the 3 this year.
