"Oh the defense sucks, we need a new defensive coordinator (which has been used twice now)"
"Oh we're breaking in a new quarterback"
"Oh we have a lot of injuries"
You can't really blame him, it's in his pedigree. He was mentored by Bobby Bowden who under achieved for at least 10 seasons. Like Bowden Richt pulls in good and even elite recruiting hauls but just always falls short. Bobby had his wide rights and Richt has his bad defenses. We've had some exceptionally embarrassing and unacceptable losses under Mark Richt. I won't even go into our record in recent years vs. Top 25 teams. I will however get into some of his other key losses that quite frankly should never have been allowed to happen.
In 2002 we lost to a bad Florida team which arguably kept us out of the MNC. Awesome. Good job Richt you got outcoached by Zook.
In 2005 we lost to Auburn and West Virginia due to our terribad defensive coaching from first year DC Willie Martinez. Well at least that won't be a reoccurring theme under Richt.
In 2006 we lost to Vanderbilt and Kentucky in the same season. Enough said. Not even Ray Goff pulled off that accomplishment of suckitude. No idea why Richt didn't start Stafford right off the bat. Richt's stupid loyalty problems will bite him in the ass later on.
In 2007 we lost to a pretty bad South Carolina team and to a mediocre but clearly outmatched UT team that we had a big lead against (sign of our defensive woes). Mark Richt secures just one of those games and doesn't shit the bed we play in the SECCG that year and quite possibly the MNC if we get by a decent LSU team. Oh well. At least we beat a terrible Hawaii in New Orleans.
In 2008 we got boat raced twice by two elite coaches. These two games honestly say a lot. Both games Georgia got mauled by Meyer and Saban. Both coaches are way out of Richt's league and it was almost comical how bad and ill-prepared we looked in both games. You will almost never see either of those coaches get boat raced like that (only exception was Bama vs. Utah). Then we have the lovely game vs. Georgia Tech. No business losing that game, but our defense decided we should lose anyways. It was abundantly clear that Willie Martinez should have been let go after this season. In all of our games we lost our defense got molested. Richt decides to keep Willie Martinez despite his coaching deficiencies and lack of recruiting potential.
In 2009 we got to utilize the great Joe Cox. Honestly the year wasn't as bad as it could have been considering Richt didn't fire Martinez after 2008 like he should have. We sucked though. Richt gets rid of Martinez but makes a critical mistake yet again. He keeps Rodney Garner and our at the time atrociously awful S&C CVH. This bites us in the ass because we get stuck with Grantham instead of Kirby Smart.
In 2010 we sucked balls. Murray's first season and Grantham's first season. Richt gets a mulligan on this season (though losing to UCF and Colorado was entirely unacceptable and I predicted both losses).
In 2011 we look like dog shit vs. a Boise State team that went on to lose to the powerhouse of Nevada. Then we lose a close game to South Carolina. Well miraculously we don't up any other games (though we tried our best to vs. a terrible Florida team) and go on into Atlanta. Ah, we are up vs. LSU by 14 points at the half (would be 21-0 but our receivers sucked balls that game). We get molested in the 2nd half due to Special Teams destroying any and all momentum.
In 2012 we look like unprepared hot garbage vs. South Carolina. No excuse. Richt should have been fired after that game but whatever. We win the East and ALMOST make it to the MNC. Our defense sucked balls for having by far the most talent in the nation in the starting line up. This was Richt's best chance and his last chance and he blew it by not spiking the ball.
In 2013 lost to Vandy and Clemsuck. Enough said.
The problem with Mark Richt is a he is a solid coach that used to be "good". Never "great" or "elite" by any means. He has never been an elite recruiter or offensive coach. Meyer has his elite offense and special teams. Saban has his elite defense and coaching hires. Richt will never be on that sort of level. Never. He is also worse than several coaches in the SEC:
1. Nick Saban
2. Steve Spurrier
3. Kevin Sumlin
4. Les Miles
5. Mark Richt
That's being generous. He is arguably already worse than Freeze, Malzahn and Franklin. He's a B student coaching vs. Honor Students and Valedictorians. You put him somewhere like the Big-12 and he is suddenly Bob Stoops which that in of itself isn't entirely endearing
Richt's main issue is he lacks killer instinct and a keen eye for detail. He lets certain phases of the team crumble under his watch and has a "ho hum" attitude about it. He's let the special teams and defense go to complete shit the last 6 or so years. He also takes his foot off the gas when we have any sort of lead. There is no urgency or killing blow from Richt. He doesn't go for the jugular. Ever. Sure he will take risks here and there but not to put a game away but merely out of desperation. Mark Richt is merely a solid coach. If 9 win seasons and Capital One Bowls are what you want as pinnacles of success than Mark Richt is the coach for you. I personally think Georgia has too much money and too much natural in-state talent begging to be utilized for UGA to settle with Richt. There is no reason Georgia can't be as good as teams like Alabama and Florida and Ohio State. None. Have the money and in-state talent and our only in-state competitor is Georgia Tech.
To me, the most damning thing about Richt's career took place this season. It was made evident last night and no it wasn't the Vanderbilt loss. It was the FSU at Clemson game. FSU obliterated Clemson on the road. The same Clemson team we lost to with months to prepare and a RS Senior QB. FSU went to Death Valley and spanked Clemson with a freshman quarterback. Mark Richt sucks.
Mark Richt needs to resign or be let go after this year. The question is, does McGarity have the spine to do anything? I highly doubt it.
