His 4-3 defenses performed very well at Miami and his personality would mesh really well with CMR. He was the one that wanted to put an end to the Shapiro garbage and it's what ended his career at Miami.

2001 -6th
2002 - 7th
2003 - 2nd
2004 - 28th
2005 - 4th
2006 - 7th

Those are his Miami defense rankings nationally while he was there...

Yeah I copy pasted from a different post, I'd have to find the stats for the last years there. He did have a bad situation going on there though due to administrative problems.

Are UGA fans ready to see the D be inconsistent and struggle for 2 years while they can adjust and recruit to the 4/3? The CTG base D is a 5/2 more than a 3/4. So your LBs and DEs have different roles and different skill sets.

Your DEs become DTs and your OLBs become DEs and you recruit different types of LBs. Your OLBs will need to add muscle and weight or your current DEs will need to shed weight and gain speed. Add that's before they learn the new system and roles in the system.

No CTG's base D is actually much closer to a Nickel package than a 5-2. Ray Drew is meant to be a 4-3 Strong DE. Jenkins could VERY easily be a Weak DE. Same with Floyd who has to put on weight in the off-season regardless. The transition wouldn't be NEARLY as hard as you make it out to be. You do know we're literally 117th in forced turnovers. Our defense can't be worse than it is. It's statistically massively improbable. The 4-3 is also a much simpler defense than the 3-4.

Even if the transition would be hard (it wouldn't be as hard as you make it out to be, I'd agree with you if we were going from the 4-3 to 3-4 though) it's not like our defense is average let alone good enough to worry about growing pains.

The 3-4 requires much more specialized players that are also more scarce AND the 3-4 defense is significantly more complicated than your typical 4-3 college D. The 3-4 requires lots of specialized players:

- Supreme pass rushing OLB's. You basically have to find two guys meant to play weakside defensive end that also happen to not completely suck in coverage.
- The rare 330 pound plus NT's that can eat up 2 blockers to free up room for your ILBs. Incredibly rare to find a good college NT
- Exceptionally good ILB's that can shed blocks to stop the run.

He isn't going anywhere anytime soon... Hopefully BB will see his value as a south UF recruiter and promote him to DC

Smokey, you are cracking me up about the whole switching defense thing.
They currently have to score 40 points to win a game (except for us).

I really doubt starting from scratch is going to bother anyone.

Randy Shannon is a bitch, but he is a good DC and a better recruiter.
And he at doesn't tolerate bull. That's why Miami sucked when he was HC.

Exactly. Only reason he wasn't that great (his defenses were still good) as a HC at Miami was because their administration blows and it's hard to recruit in South Florida if you ain't willing to cheat and put up with horse shit.

If they change systems and go with a guy that hasn't been a DC since 2006 it will be 1-2 years before they see improvement the fans will be happy with. Lining up correctly, getting your responsibility right, terminology on top of teaching fundamentals?

It took 2 years for UGA fans to fall out of love with CTG, do you think they will give Randy Shannon 2 years to fix the issues in Athens? Keep in mind CMR has a very limited amount of time left in Athens.

CMR has limited time left in Athens? What? He's proven he can get us to the SECCG. He has plenty of time... you don't fire a coach that has gotten to Atlanta 5 times in the span of 11 years. Hell there aren't any Georgia fans calling for Richt's head except for CCRider.

Defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, once considered a possible successor to coach Romeo Crennel, was unexpectedly fired Friday after Cleveland's defense finished the season as one of the NFL's worst units.

Grantham's dismissal was a surprise because it came just months after the fiery 41-year-old signed a two-year contract extension. It also followed Cleveland's turnaround 10-6 season, which ended just shy of the AFC playoffs.

But Grantham's stock steadily plummeted as the Browns' defense struggled almost the entire season before ending up ranked 30th overall. The Browns apparently felt Grantham wasn't getting the most from his players and decided to part ways.

The team put out a short statement announcing that Grantham "will not be retained for the 2008 season."

"Todd has worked extremely hard during his three seasons with the Browns," Crennel said in a statement. "Following our discussions after the season, it was decided that it was in the best interests of the organization to move in a different direction."

He said a decision "will be forthcoming" on a replacement for Grantham, who was a finalist for Michigan State's job last year.

Crennel favors continuity on his staff and will give defensive backs coach Mel Tucker strong consideration. Tucker has been with the Browns for three seasons and is popular the players.

Crennel, who won three Super Bowl titles as New England's defensive coordinator, was direct about his disappointment with the Browns' defense all season. He may decide to take on a more hands-on approach with Cleveland's defense next season and mentor Tucker in the process.

Grantham's third season with the Browns was worse than his first two, when his unit managed to keep Cleveland in games despite a shaky offense.

In 2007, Cleveland's defense gave up 382 points and allowed 359.6 yards per game -- both increases from '06. The Browns were a one-sided team, with an explosive, score-from-anywhere offense and a defense that was mediocre at its best.

Last season, the Browns' defense ranked 15th in pass defense despite numerous injuries to their secondary. In his first season, Grantham helped Crennel break in a new 3-4 scheme and the Browns finished first in the AFC in red-zone defense, fourth in the league in pass defense and tied for 16th overall.

But despite an upgrade in personnel through free agency and the draft, the Browns' defense never improved at stopping the run during Grantham's tenure. Cleveland ranked 30th against the run in 2005, 29th in 2006 and 27th this season.

Grantham was Houston's defensive line coach before he was hired by the Browns. He was Indianapolis' defensive line coach from 1999-2001.

Earlier this week, Browns general manager Phil Savage said the club would begin talks with Crennel's agent, Joe Linta, about a contract extension for the coach, who is 20-28 in three seasons with Cleveland.

Also, the Browns rewarded offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski with a two-year extension through the 2011 season.

Do you think he can make it through 1-2 years of installing a new D? Dude hasn't won an SEC title since 2005. He has 13 years and add 2 more puts him at 15 years in Athens with no BCS titles.

I just don't see running a guy out of town because he has a young D. They kept Bobo around and he went from goat to "let's name shit in his honor" in a few years. Why not expect the same from CTG? Everyone knew going into this year the D was going to be a liability. Next year will be the first year with his guys with a year in system. It would be silly to replace him at this point.

Grantham had enough of "his guys" last year. He had players that are dominating in the NFL (Jarvis, John Jenkins, Ogletree) and other NFL caliber talent players and his defense still stunk. I'd get the youth argument but the defense has gotten WORSE since week 1. WORSE.

If UGA ran off Mark Richt any time soon we'd be the laughing stock of college football. Karma would rape us wore than it did UT for firing Fulmer. You don't get rid of a guy that is consistently in the SEC race. Yeah, no MNC yet but he's picked bad times to have really strong years.
