Are we counting teams who use banned substances?? If so then Bama. If not then LSU. Sure LSU loses a lot, but so does every other good defense...plus the Tigers have Chavis.

Bama and UF will the best overall imo but USC is right there in the mix with Clowney.
Georgia may have the best Offense in the SEC next year but I don't think they will rank top 5 in defense.

. Now Florida, they'll porbably have some drop off, they lose 2 safeties, the two best Linebackers on the team, and 2 starting inside DLineman.
Holy shit. Good luck on your " stopping the run 2013" goals

Oh, I'm sorry... I forgot, everyone thinks I'm a bigger homer than RJ.
Let me change my answer - GEORGIA, by a LONG shot!

Easly who played end for us last year started at DT for his first 2 years and can play either spot but he will move inside where he's better suited because he's a run stopper and they have a JC transfer from last year who is a damn monster inside as well as 2 JC guys coming in this year who can do just as well. Honestly I think our D-Line will be better this season because of Lawing and future hall of famer Bryant Young coaching them up together. Now the Linebackers will be young so if someone gets past the d line then that might be a different story.

On paper, it looks like UGA would be the one to bet on........
so I'm betting on the Tide
can the Tide have the #1 defense after losing Lester at safety, Milliner at CB, Nico at LB, Jesse at DT, Square at DE, Dial at DT?
I think we have a chance to be a little better than last year actually with Pagan and Hubbard growing up a little bit, I think Fanning splits time with Dickson, and will be a monster

Oh yeah, things are looking so good! We will be better next year in lots of things. Overall we should have a better team.

Only team I'd be sure of would be Bama.....UF, LSU, USC would be somewhere behind battling for 2nd place. All 3 teams lost a good portion of starters: in terms of players who started 6 or more games on defense in '13, LSU lost 9, UF lost 7, and USC lost 6.
I also would add Vanderbilt into the mix: I see no one else has, but they were 3rd in the SEC in pass D in '12, 8th in run D (38th nationally), 2nd in pass efficiency D, 5th in scoring D, and 5th in total D. They were top 20 nationally in all those stats with the exception of the run D. They also had a top 20 defense nationally in 2011 too, so it wasn't a fluke. Plus I think they're only losing 5 players from their D that started 6 or more games...
UGA IMO would fall somewhere below USC, UF, LSU, and VU. They had all that talent that were NFL-draft worthy, and had been in Grantham's defense for 3 years. UGA failed to make the top 5 in the SEC in ANY major defensive category, with the exception of passing defense, which they were 2nd in the conference and 8th nationally. The passing defense ranking has to do with the number of passing yards allowed per game. But no one has yet pointed out that UGA had such a great pass D because no one passed on them. And this was because they had a poor run defense:
UGA's opponents passed a total of 351 attempts against UGA's defense, the fewest against any SEC defense. And UGA played in 14 total games, not 13 like most other SEC teams. Those opponents completed an even 200 of those passes, also the lowest number. But they averaged 12.3 yds per completion, which was 12th best in the SEC: only UT and Arky's pass defenses allowed more yds per reception. And they allowed 7.01 yds per attempt, good enough for 8th in the SEC. So UGA's pass D effectiveness is somewhat misleading...
UGA's run D was ranked 12th in the SEC and 77th nationally. Opponents attempted 616 run plays against the Bulldog defense, FAR FAR more than against any other SEC team. The 2nd most run attempts was 504, and was a tie between USC and MSU. No other SEC team were run against more than 500 times. Opponents only threw the ball 36% of their games versus UGA...

Good post by Conway...one other thing I'd add about who UGA will be starting: it doesn't say great things about them considering how worn out Grantham let the starters get before he rotated them out.

Lol, somebody is obsessed. Nobody's even talking about us and yet he writes three paragraphs about Georgia and says UGA nine times.

Mosley returning for another season helps us immensely. Did not expect for that to happen. LB's will be overall better than last year. Secondary probably about the same. D-line is a tossup...lose a lot of talent/leadership from last year though the talent is there. We will need some guys to emerge right away. Especially Darren Lake at NT now that we lost Jesse and presumably DJ Pettway.
