It warts me like hell that Minnesota has to be in the Northwest division with OKC/DEN/UTA/POR and not in a division with the other Great Lakes region teams, so I thought of changing it up a bit.  No conferences; just five (instead of six) divisions of six (instead of five) teams.  How's this idea?
  • Divisions
    • Northeast:  Boston, Brooklyn, New York, Philadelphia, Toronto, Washington
    • Central:  Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Indiana, Milwaukee, Minnesota
    • Southeast:  Atlanta, Charlotte, Memphis, Miami, New Orleans, Orlando
    • Midwest:  Dallas, Denver, Houston, Oklahoma City, San Antonio, Utah
    • Pacific:  Golden State, Los Angeles, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Portland, Seattle
  • Scheduling
    • Play your division 4 times (20 games)
    • Play each of two annually-rotating divisions 3 times (36 games)
    • Play the other two divisions, also rotating annually, 2 times (24 games)
      • Of these two divisions, play the team in each division who finished parallel to you a third time.  This means, for example, that all the divisions winners (right now that would be NY/MIA/IND/SAS/LAC) will play each other three times annually.  This gives us an extra Heat/Clippers game next year, for example. (2 games)
    • Total:  82 games
  • All Star Game
    • Top two vote-getters (Bryant and James this year) are team captains who pick their teams, player by player, on some sort of live online event
    • Instead of East/West, the teams will be named something of the team captain's choice.  Kobe's Mambas vs. Lebron's Witnesses?
  • Playoffs
    • Five division winners get the top five seeds
      • San Antonio

      • Miami

      • L.A. Clippers

      • New York

      • Indiana
    • 11 wild cards fill out the 16-game playoff
      6. Oklahoma City
      7. Denver
      8. Memphis
      9. Chicago
      10. Golden State
      11. Brooklyn
      12. Atlanta
      13. Houston
      14. Utah
      15. Boston
      16. Milwaukee
    • 2-3-2, 7-game series, straight 16-team tournament. Matchups as of today:
      • 1 San Antonio vs. 16 Milwaukee
      • 8 Memphis vs. 9 Chicago
      • 4 New York vs. 13 Houston
      • 5 Indiana vs. 12 Atlanta
      • 3 L.A. Clippers vs. 14 Utah
      • 6 Oklahoma City vs. 11 Brooklyn
      • 2 Miami vs. 15 Boston
      • 7 Denver vs. 10 Golden State

I honestly really like this. For the all star game maybe the fans pick 3 players to represent their teams and the 2 top vote getters pick from those semifinalists. This is a really good idea. Maybe it should be mailed to David Stern haha.

There's definitely room for the fans to get a say in some of this.

But get this: who would Kobe's first pick be? Dwight Howard? Or could he be a total bastard and pick Dwyane Wade away from Lebron? Or Chris Paul? Could be a lot of popcorn drama, whether real or kayfabe.

Or, perhaps, this is your platform to become his successor...
