So I've been looking around at some linux based operating systems to install onto my mac. I'm just looking for a change, and maybe something a bit more customizable. Thoughts on the matter?

I was looking at Ubuntu last night. What are the advantages of running Linux as opposed to OSX?
Also is it really as simple as downloading it to a USB stick, than uploading to your computer?

Essentially, yes. Set the computer to boot from USB, d/l Ubuntu install ISO to USB, plug in, start up computer, and you're golden.
Advantages over OSX:
1) It isn't OSX.
That should be enough. Apple sucks.

I'm really not an extremely savvy person in these matters but I'm interested in branching out because it seems like I'm a bit limited in my current OS.
well osx has a native terminal which uses the unix command line interface, and i use that more than the GUI desktop. ubuntu has a terminal too but if youre not doing command line stuff you wont notice it.
ubuntu should work just fine for you. it will be new and different and you will appreciate the customization after coming from osx.

Do linux users tend to use the command line more often? What are the advantages?
Also is there any possibility of messing up my computer, or voiding the warranty by using another operating system?

I rarely use command line. Changing operating systems has no effect on the warranty. Ubuntu is clean and lean. You can add stuff you need as you go rather than having to delete crap that you do not need. Also the need for anti virus is nill. THe native browser for Ubuntu is Firefox but you can install the superior Chrome very easily.
